    A friend challenged me to find manga recommendations for a non-manga reader like him. This is probably one of them. Otoyomegatari (or 'A Bride's Story') an exotic cross between historical romance/slice of life, The Travels of Marco Polo, and National Geographic. It has such exquisite and detailed artwork that I know will appeal to my artistic friend. But most of all, has that Kaoru Mori (one of my favorite mangakas, by the way) distinction of having interesting female characters having the time A friend challenged me to find manga recommendations for a non-manga reader like him.     This is such a wonderful series. Set in the Caucasus Mountains of Turkmenistan in the 19th century, this series opens a window onto a world that's almost entirely foreign to us, and yet under Mori's skilled hand it feels familiar too. Mori's artwork is astounding - she draws the costumes, the scenery and the architecture of the period in loving and painstakingly-accurate detail. It's a real feast for the eyes. She gives you a sense of the vast, spare beauty of the plains, as well as stuffing her This is such a wonderful series. Set in the Caucasus Mountains of Turkmenistan in the 19th century, this series opens a window onto a world that's almost entirely foreign to us, and yet under Mori's skilled hand it feels familiar too. Mori's artwork is astounding - she draws the costumes, the scenery and the architecture of the period in loving and painstakingly-accurate detail. It's a real feast for the eyes. She gives you a sense of the vast, spare beauty of the plains, as well as stuffing her pictures with tiny details most people would overlook. She draws movement and action better than any other artist I've seen - her running horses and bounding rabbits seem to leap off the page. And somehow, she puts an interesting story in there too. This first volume is mostly table-setting, but it takes off in the last chapter, and gallops away in the second volume.The premise of the story is that a bride of 20 (quite old by the standards of the period) is married to a boy 8 years her junior. You'd think that would be all kinds of icky, but it's not at all. Mori is very careful with the story, and it never crosses the line into weirdness. The set-up also allows her to complicate the power dynamics - women were more or less under the complete control of their husbands then, but what happens when your husband is 12 years old? And what happens when that tenuous marriage is threatened? It's a great idea for a story, one that only works in this period and this place, and I can't wait to see what happens next.

Επίσης είδα σε πολλά φόρα του εξωτερικού ένα ξέσπασμα όσον αφορά την μικρή ηλικία του αγοριού (12 ετών). Όσο και να ζόρισα το μικρό μου μυαλουδάκι δεν μπορώ να εξηγήσω πως κάποιοι δεν αντιλαμβάνονται ότι το κόμικ μιλάει για μια τελείως διαφορετική πραγματικότητα σε μία εποχή που οι ακρότητες χρήζουν άμεσου επαναπροσδιορισμού με βάση τις σημερινές.

    Another great volume, full of gorgeous art and interesting historical and cultural detail. This volume focuses on Pariya, who tends to come across as abrasive, but desperately wants to get married to a particular young man. Female friendship and courting customs are explored, and it’s easy to empathize and grimace with Pariya as she struggle to fit a mold not designed for her. I stayed up way too late reading volume 8 and this volume back to back.     ***up to chapter 64I love the way the mangaka tells the story of the brides. This manga is so beautiful, I can't have enough of it.I'm depressedly waiting for the new chapter (a new whole volume would be great).

    2nd Reading Date: 03.26.19 Found volumes 5-8 at my local library, so I thought I would reread the first 4 volumes online. I really enjoyed this! Mori's story-line is so interesting, but I'm in love with her artwork! The detailing is so fine and intricate; I can't help but admire every full-page drawing. The only thing that bothers me is the age gap, though I acknowledge that large age gaps are common in most cultures around this time period. I have no issue with the fact that it is Amira (the 2nd Reading Date: 03.26.19 Found volumes 5-8 at my local library, so I thought I would reread the first 4 volumes online. I really enjoyed this! Mori's story-line is so interesting, but I'm in love with her artwork! The detailing is so fine and intricate; I can't help but admire every full-page drawing. The only thing that bothers me is the age gap, though I acknowledge that large age gaps are common in most cultures around this time period. I have no issue with the fact that it is Amira (the bride) who's older in the relationship; in fact, it's so refreshing to see in a time period and culture where young girls are married off to men much older than them. However, it is uneasy to see a 20 year-old in a romantic relationship with a 12 year-old child. AGAIN, I would've been just as uncomfortable if it was your traditional older man-younger girl dynamic. Though the age gap takes time getting used to, it's wonderful to see how Amira cares for Karluk. And, as someone who's read the next three volumes, I'll say that their relationship progresses beautifully. Ok, on to the next one!Original ReviewEnjoyed it!     I think the only thing negative I can say is that I would have liked more dialogue. Very interesting series with plenty of surprises and relevant issues for today. Subtle and understated on the whole, and you often have to wonder what the characters are really thinking but are not allowed to express. Most obviously to a modern Westerner, though Amira smiles and behaves as if she is happy and seems to love her husband, can a 20 year old woman really be content and fulfilled with a 12 year old I think the only thing negative I can say is that I would have liked more dialogue. Very interesting series with plenty of surprises and relevant issues for today. Subtle and understated on the whole, and you often have to wonder what the characters are really thinking but are not allowed to express. Most obviously to a modern Westerner, though Amira smiles and behaves as if she is happy and seems to love her husband, can a 20 year old woman really be content and fulfilled with a 12 year old spouse? In a society in which women are bought and sold and traded, kept and displayed, how could any woman be happy? Come to this series with an open mind about the ways of other times and places, and you will be rewarded. It definitely gives plenty to think about! It also makes me very thankful that I was born when and where I was!

    Desde el trazo de cada personajes, vestuario y escenario, hasta la simplicidad de la historia, me ha fascinado todo. Como es una especie de drama histórico, entiendo en cierta parte las circunstancias de la protagonista y su matrimonio, también medio comprendo un poco sobre la razón detrás de la gran diferencia de edad entre los protagonista (a pesar que aún no se ha dicho nada directamente) por ello no tengo problemas con ese asunto, no obstante este tipo de cosas siempre suelen no terminarme Desde el trazo de cada personajes, vestuario y escenario, hasta la simplicidad de la historia, me ha fascinado todo. Como es una especie de drama histórico, entiendo en cierta parte las circunstancias de la protagonista y su matrimonio, también medio comprendo un poco sobre la razón detrás de la gran diferencia de edad entre los protagonista (a pesar que aún no se ha dicho nada directamente) por ello no tengo problemas con ese asunto, no obstante este tipo de cosas siempre suelen no terminarme de cuadrar por completo. Pero seguiré leyendo porque realmente es una historia fascinante. Gracias a las mil y una veces que me la recomendaste Pan, finalmente la estoy leyendo.

    تدور الأحداث في القرن 19 وتحكي عن فتاة بدوية عشرينية اسمها أميره من كازاخستان زُوِجت بصبي عمره 12 سنه فقط، تتحدث القصه عن يوميات هذين الزوجين و كيف تتأقلم أميره مع بيئتها الجديدة كما تشمل أيضاً مشاكل الشخصيات الأخرى و بعض القصص عنهم، و تضم كذلك كمية كبيره من المعلومات عن الحياة في ذلك الوقت و عن الثقافة الكازاخستانية آن ذاك. أكثر شي يلفت النظر في المانجا هو الزخارف، كميية جمال كبيره .

    القصة اوسع من كونها قصة عروس شابة تزوجت بفتا اصغر منها ب 8 سنوات , فهي توضح عادات و تقاليد القبائل و القرى التي عاشت قرب بحر القزويين في القرن التاسع عشر, و هي ايضا لا تركز فقط على قصة العروس الرئيسية , هناك اكثر من 5 عروسات ظهرت في القصة لحد الان <3, الرسم في القصة قصة لوحده, مستوى التفاصيل خيالي جداو واقعي بشكل جميل .

    Suka banget sama karya manga-ka ini. Artworknya sangat bagus dan detil. Ceritanya adorable dengan kepolosan yang luar biasa juga sisipan komedi yang menyegarkan.One of my favorite Josei along with Yotsuba and Emma.
