Shades of Midnight (Midnight Breed, #7)
In a frozen wilderness steeped in darkness, the lines between good and evil, lover and enemy, are never black or white but drawn in Shades of Midnight.Something inhuman is stalking the frigid Alaskan wilds, leaving unspeakable carnage in its wake. For bush pilot Alexandra Maguire, the killings stir memories of a horrific event she witnessed as a child and evoke in her the inexplicable sense of otherness she has long felt within herself but never fully understood . . . until a darkly seductive stranger with secrets of his own enters her world.Sent from Boston on a mission to investigate the savage attacks and stop the slaughter, vampire warrior Kade has his own reasons for returning to the frigid, forbidding place of his birth. Haunted by a secret shame, Kade soon realizes the stunning truth of the threat he faces–a threat that will jeopardize the fragile bond he has formed with the courageous, determined young woman who arouses his deepest passions and most primal hungers. But in bringing Alex into his world of blood and darkness, Kade must confront both his own personal demons and the even greater evil that could destroy all he holds dear.

4 Call of the Wild Stars SpoilersShades of Midnight was a good read. I will say the first time I read it I rated it a 5 star, but this time around I'm rating it a 4. Still even with the rush feel to their love it was a really good book. Alexandra was a great heroine. Smart, compassionate, and understanding. I loved that she didn't freak out when Kade told her about the Breed and breedmates. I also liked that when she thought he was a killer she still loved him. Kade I liked a lot but I felt he was too disparaging when it came to himself and his family. He took all their problems on his shoulders like everything was his fault. I really liked Alex's best friend Jenna. My heart broke for all she had suffered. Then to have the Ancient do something unknown to her. Also I could really feel the instant connection between Brock and Jenna. It was sweet how protective Brock was with Jenna. Hunter was sexy and badass in this book. Hunter as always been my favorite hero of the series. Tegan my second. I can't wait to read Hunters book again. I liked the plot of this book. I was glad the Ancient bit it although I was a little sad for his loneliness and the torture he endured while imprisoned. I also really liked that Kades twin Seth died with honor, since he didn't live with it. It was nice to give Seth a good death. Overall even though it wasn't as good this time as the first time I read it, still I love this series!

5 stars – Vampire RomanceIn this latest installment of the Midnight Breed series, a killer is leaving a violent, bloodthirsty trail of carnage through the Alaskan wilderness and it’s up to one of the Breed Order’s newest recruits, the volatile vampire warrior Kade, and a local bush pilot, Alexandra Maguire, to uncover the truth behind the brutal slayings and stop an ancient evil before it’s too late.Kade, with his spiky raven, jet black hair, golden skin, penetrating, hypnotic, silver eyes, erot 5 stars – Vampire RomanceIn this latest installment of the Midnight Breed series, a killer is leaving a violent, bloodthirsty trail of carnage through the Alaskan wilderness and it’s up to one of the Breed Order’s newest recruits, the volatile vampire warrior Kade, and a local bush pilot, Alexandra Maguire, to uncover the truth behind the brutal slayings and stop an ancient evil before it’s too late.Kade, with his spiky raven, jet black hair, golden skin, penetrating, hypnotic, silver eyes, erotic, otherworldly dermaglyph tattoos of variegated hues across his arms, shoulders, torso, and thighs, and wildly passionate, intensely caring, and fiercely protective nature, is one of my favorite warriors of the series so far. Although the relationship between Kade and Alex was somewhat swiftly developed, their bond of friendship and sensual romance was convincing (and hot!), and I found it refreshing that Alex was open-minded once Kade revealed the truth, even though she had genuine reason to be afraid based on horrific events in her past. With a harshly beautiful, wild Alaskan setting, a sexy, strong warrior hero, a likable, brave heroine, steamy romance, intense action and adventure, scary monster villains, and a loyal wolf dog named Luna helping to save the day, it’s another thrilling addition to the awesome Midnight Breed series. I’m looking forward to Brock’s story in Taken by Midnight, coming out in Sept’2010!

Nicely done, Ms. Adrian. This was a very good book. Kade turned out to be a real sweetie under that hardcore, ice-cold warrior facade. He was very tortured by the double whammy of his brother's killer predilection and the fear that he'd be the same. Even though he was living a life of fighting with the Order and partying hard off-duty with human women to get his blood fix, deep down, I think he wanted a woman for his own mate the whole time. When he met Alexandra, it clicked. And it was the same Nicely done, Ms. Adrian. This was a very good book. Kade turned out to be a real sweetie under that hardcore, ice-cold warrior facade. Even though he was living a life of fighting with the Order and partying hard off-duty with human women to get his blood fix, deep down, I think he wanted a woman for his own mate the whole time. When he met Alexandra, it clicked. And it was the same for Alex. This book turned out to be surprisingly romantic. I didn't expect that. But, I've found that this series is getting more and more along the lines of what I like in a paranormal romance, although it also a gritty action-filled series. I love a good action story with a great romance, so I'm pretty happy! The setting was very good. Since I love cold weather and it's hot as blazes here in Texas, I enjoyed reading this book set in the frigid arctic Alaskan tundra. I wanted to switch places with Alex (for numerous reasons--except for the psycho blood-thirsty killer parts).I actually felt kind of sorry for the Ancient. I know, soft touch here. Imagine being stranded on a planet, having been kept prisoner and escaping finally, to be completely out of your element and time? Hunted by your enemies with no one to turn to. Part of me wonders if he will re-emerge. What's the whole deal with Jenna? What did the Ancient do to her?Could I be crushing harder on Tegan? I love the man. I was very happy that he turned up in this book so I could drool over him. I'm also loving Hunter. That is one bad.... well, you know what I mean. I cannot wait for his book. I'm seeing more aspects of Brock (loyal, protective, good-hearted), and I think his book is going to be very good. I wonder if Chase isn't going to implode any time soon. He's acting pretty weird.Shades of Midnight was fast-paced but there was a satisfying core of emotional elements. There was the intensity of the love between Alex and Kade that developed quickly but was definitely real and lasting, and the treatment of family in how Kade had to walk away from his for his own sanity, and how Alex had lost hers in very tragic ways. The power of the bond between the Order, and how it became the anchor that Kade needed after he was left adrift when he walked away from his family in Alaska, and his troubled twin brother. Also, seeing some element of human emotion in the Ancient, who had seemed only to be a creature capable of violence prior to this book. I loved Kade's ability to communicate with animals, and how he connected to the wolves. The message about not wantonly slaughtering the wolves because they were suspected to be killing people was timely. Wolves have just now been reintroduced into many natural places in North America. They are a vital part of the ecosystem and are gorgeous, fascinating animals to me. So, I was all on board with protecting the wolves like Alex was. And then there was Alex's lovely wolf-hybrid dog, Luna. What a great companion. If I had one complaint, I wish that Alex's Breedmate talent was more developed. It seemed like a bit of an afterthought. Otherwise, I was pretty satisfied with this book.Overall rating: 4.5/5.0 stars.

I wanted so badly for things to work out. I wanted family members to talk to each other, to show their love. I was so afraid of the worst case scenario. It was very well written, especially considering it was more of a subplot than the ongoing thread of this series.Another great installment from Lara Adrian with excellent narration by Hillary Huber.

It begins really intense with a whole native family being slaughtered and someone videotaping the aftermath. The video is put on the Internet and Kade is sent to investigate as the Order is suspecting Rogues have been involved.Kade is from Alaska close to the village the incident took place. It appears that there are specific issues which led him to leave his family to join the Order, family issues. There is a twin brother of him, Seth with a really dark nature. From this dark nature Kade was trying to escape, when he left. Above all Kade and Seth are predators. They love hunting, killing and bathing into blood. Seth also likes taking souvenirs from his killings.Alex is the pilot of the village and she has a dog (half breed wolf actually), Luna. Alex is originated from sunny Florida and with her father they moved to frozen Alaska as far as possible from her birth city. We learn that her mother and brother were killed horribly in Florida by Rogues. Alex is more openminded towards breeds because of these killings. The attraction between Kade and Alex is instant. I loved the chemistry between them and the fact that Alex is so understanding and openminded."Shades of midnight" sets up the next book "Taken by the midnight", so if it is possible I suggest you read one after the other. Next book is the story of Brock and Jenna. Jenna is the best friend of Alex and she had a close and personal contact with the Ancient in Alaska the night she decided to kill herself. It was actually the first time we see that the Ancient has emotions. He asks her if she wants to live and he spares her life. We will see how Ancient affects her life in the next book.Really loved the book: the settings, the strong scenes, the storyline, the dialogues, the main couple. Great addition to the series!

SHADES OF MIDNIGHT is book 7 from the Midnight Breed series which I’ve followed from the beginning and for the most part really enjoyed. You can always count on yummy and tortured alpha male heroes, steamy romance and exciting action filled paranormal storylines. You can always count on yummy and tortured alpha male heroes, steamy romance and exciting action filled paranormal storylines. Adrian has built a great Vampire world here that always reminds me of a vanilla-fied version of Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood. Unlike Ward each instalment continues to be either hit or miss for me though and I’m never really sure going in which one I’m going to get. With this instalment we travel to the snow, cold and almost perpetual darkness of Harmony Alaska, focusing on newer Breed member Kade and his strong and independent breedmate to be, bush pilot Alexandra. I loved the setting; with its remote settlements, small town characters, wolves, snow mobile action scenes and death deifying single engine flights. You could almost feel your breath freezing and the snow crunching beneath your boots. I think that this could easily be read as a stand alone too as it steps away from the previous story arcs and main breed characters. (They do make a small appearance however and Hunter in particular intrigued me) Lara Adrian has also given the rules to her vampire world and filled in an relative back story, so you won’t ever be lost. After a rather gruesome prologue we join Alexandra Maguire and her wolf dog Luna as they fly to one of the remote settlements on her supply route. What she comes across when she arrives is horrific. Someone or something has slaughtered the entire Tom family, reminding Alex of the unspeakable events from her childhood that’s kept her running and pretending ever since. Back in Boston at the Breed compound word of the attack has reached the ranks of the Order. Little known member Kade is sent to investigate, having been born and raised in Alaska he’s the logical choice and the only one truly comfortable in the cold. What the Order doesn’t know however is that Kade’s twin brother could be the one responsible for the murders. But if anyone remembers what happened at the end of Ashes of Midnight you’ll also know that the Order has even bigger problems in the form of one roving and unrestrained Generation One warrior. So for me this was just an okay read. Nothing special or remarkable happened that added to the series as a whole, there were few surprises and the romance was quick, trouble free and lukewarm at best. I never really felt any connection to or between Kade and Alex and in the end came away not feeling much of anything with a romance and story that I’ll soon forget. Nonetheless I will continue to recommend this series and be looking for the next addition Taken by Midnight as soon as it hit’s the shelves. Cheers! "Do you… do this often?" "Get naked with sexy Alaskan bush pilots in the middle of the frozen wilderness?" He paused for a minute "Nope, this was a first time for me"

This latest installment in Lara Adrian's "Midnight Breed" series is leaps and bounds better than the last one, IMO. I could barely finish "Ashes of Midnight" but I could barely put this one down.Kade is one of the newer members of the Order. He was introduced a couple of books ago as a new recruit along with Brock. At the time I felt it was a rather obvious and awkward effort to bring racial diversity to the crew. I still feel that way. Not that I object to the end result. But their introduction was so purposed that it left me not really caring about either one of them. It felt like they didn't come organically into the story. I didn't think I would care much about Kade in his own book. However, Adrian's template always take the lead couple away from everyone else so we can get to know them individually as well as see their chemistry. Then the others are brought in and the group chemistry is explored. I think this is an excellent template, and I'm generally not a fan of plot models. Getting to know Kade this way, I fell pretty quickly and deeply in love. And I liked Alex quite a bit, too. Still grieving her father's death and feeling completely alone, she's thrust into a situation that not only reminds her of her beloved dad, but threatens to expose secrets she's kept for over a decade.Kade has his own secrets and problems. Born and raised in Alaska, he and his twin brother inherited a talent from their mother that can potentially translate to a curse. This brings up a haunting story line about which I'll say no more to avoid giving spoilers. As I've said before, when Adrian is on she's ON. And I think she's bringing the mojo in this book. The love story really worked for me and was extremely sizzlin' as well. Despite an unfortunate anti-hunting vibe (not the specifics, but an overall negativity toward the topic which is far more complex than typically portrayed anywhere in media) Adrian's really in fine form.Brock's story is next and it looks like some of his story is already being set up in this book. If it is, I see major complications down the road for our giant friend. There are lots of possibilities for his story that should make speculation fly until the next book comes out. One last note. In my review of "Ashes" I mentioned that I was worried Adrian was going to take Chase down the Phury road. There's a scene that tells me I may not have been whistling Dixie on that concern although it might be just an odd coincidence. However, if she sticks to the template (I can't believe I'm supporting that but I am) we'll get to really know him and whoever his HEA might be. In short -- this is one of the good ones. :D

Maybe I was in a mood for love, maybe the artic background was cooling the August heat or maybe because it reminded me of one of my favorite horror movies with a similar subject (sans the romance and the happy ending) which was 30 Days of Night. One of the reasons that I keep reading this series even though I’ve never been a huge fan, is that Lara Adrian usually creates strong, independent, tough heroines that don’t sit around and wait to be rescued by their knights in shining armors. Alex is not kicking butt or anything, but you’ve got to give it to a female bush pilot in the harsh Alaskan terrain. Kade on the other hand is your typical Breed Warrior; tall, dark and handsome. The problem with me and this series is that almost every character in these books is a clone of some Breed/Breed mate prototype. Most of the time it’s just the names that change and they all feel so two dimensional, with the sole exception of Tegan and Elise maybe. Before my friend Sarah (HUGE fan of the series) hangs me from the eyelashes for the hubris, let me say that all and all it was a nice read for a lazy summer day.Ouch Sarah, ouch! I said it was nice!

I have to admit that after waiting for the release of this book i was a bit hesitant to finally read it. I read a few reviews previously that left me wondering if i would really enjoy the story. While it may or not have brought a conclusion towards one particular character, it seems to have opened the door to quite the big surprise. I'm now more anxious than before to know whose story will be next and see what this book unraveled. I know Brock's breed-mate now but am wondering what surprises she'll be bringing to the table. There's one question that am dying to ask the author though, when are we getting Chase's story? That man has hurt enough, please send him a good breedmate already!LOL

Alexandra Maguire, has seen these type of killings before. She knows what type of being it is and how dangerous it can be. Her own mother and younger brother were murdered by a vampire. But Alexandra is afraid to say anything. Kade, a vampire warrior has come to Alaska to discover who is killing at random, but he also has come to heal some bridges between himself and his family. When Kade meets Alexandra he is intrigued by her, and she is a ball of mystery and passion he wants to know more of. She seems aware of the danger that is surrounding them than the others in the town. But with the danger drawing close, both Kade and Alexandra will need to come to terms with their past and the demons that haunts them both. They discover a passion, and hidden secrets and a mystery begins to unfold that will bring one of the most dangerous creatures on their doorstep...but can they manage to stay alive? Plot and Story Line In Shades Of Midnight we have Kade's story which I really had a blast with. I love stories that are set in Alaska, but they aren't too common. So I always gobble them up the moment I grabbed hold of a story with this particular setting in it. In Shades of Midnight we have our heroine. She lives in Alaska on her own now. Her father recently passed away and they both hid a dangerous secret for many years....that Alexandra's mother and kid brother were murdered right in front of them by a vampire. They came to Alaska to escape and to heal. But Alexandra is still haunted by her past. When a carnage of killings begin, she knows exactly the type of danger that they are in. Then we see the arrival of Kade, who at first frightens Alexandra. She doesn't know who he is, but she senses the dangerous aura about him. She knows he isn't who he says he is. But there is quite a bit of sizzling chemistry that erupts between these two. Despite the mystery and secrets that are between them, we see how that doesn't keep them apart. The truth gets uglier the longer you try to hold it down. This book was quite thrilling in many ways. I could barely contain the chills while reading this one. It has the same tone as the other books do only with a bit more mystery and intrigue thrown into the mix. Like with all the books previously, this author has given us a teaser that will lead us to the next book. She definitely does this on purpose because I can't seem to put this series out of my mind. I am curious to know about the villains in the series, the enemies of the breed warriors and the mysterious ancient one they have. The Cover I think this is one of my favorite covers of the series so far. I really like the orange and green tones. I love the Alaskan forests in the bottom. Overall View Shades of Midnight is a thrilling tale of dangerous villains, a riveting mystery to keep your blood pounding in your ears and a romance that sizzles on every page!! UTTERLY EXCITING!! Shades of Midnight had a lot of potential, but I found it too slow. There was a lot of clutter in the writing that bothered me, too. Character's speculating about events that did, may or may not occur. An enormous amount of recapping or summing up of events that already happened.... As for the two main characters, Kade and Alexandra, they were good, well developed. I grew frustrated at all the doom and gloom Kade carried around based on his family situation. As for the two main characters, Kade and Alexandra, they were good, well developed. I grew frustrated at all the doom and gloom Kade carried around based on his family situation. Got SO tired of reading about all his guilt. Alexandra (Alex) had a lot of guilt, too, and her unwillingness to talk about her secrets was a bit too much, too. I was VERY surprised at who initiated the first intimate scene. Shocked. It just got flung out there totally unexpected. Disappointing because the potential for a great romance was there, then dropped. The majority of the book takes place in Harmony, Alaska which is the home of the Fairbanks Darkhaven. Seemed kinda silly to me that this small community (on 10,000 acres) out in the middle of nowhere was virtually unnoticed by the nearby town and bush pilot that flew in that region. Looked like Brock's story was set up toward the end as the character Jenna MAY be the heroine in the next book that is supposed to feature Brock. We'll see.Not one of this author's best, but I'm not giving up on this neat series, yet! Shades of Midnight seemed hastily put together, several typographical mistakes that had nothing to do with spell check. About 150 pages too long. Needed more action as there were many slow parts that dragged on and on and on....Previous characters--Tegan, Hunter, Brock, Chase--and a few others interact in this one toward the end. The final action scene was hoaky and I'm getting sick of what happened, happening in each book. Enough already. That's all I can say without posting severe spoilers.

Unfortunately, someone shot video of the crime scene and posted it on youtube. It's pretty obvious that it is the work of a vampire. Kade needs to figure out who did it and if there were any witnesses to the whole vampire thing. It could be a PR nightmare if the humans realize that vampires are out there and might be dangerous. You know, cuz of the whole blood-sucking thing.Unlike the last book, there was a lot of time spent on the romance in this one. It also seemed like it was going to have a nice build-up, but then, Bam - two days after meeting they are professing their love for each other. All of the characters in Alaska are interesting and we even get to take one home with us for the next book, which is about Brock. I just finished reading that one too, so on to the next review!

Kade is a newer member of the Order, and I was worried that I wouldn’t connect with him as much seeing as though I hadn’t known him from the beginning of the series. WRONG! I absolutely loved him, and was entrenched in his story from page 1. Of course, it helped that the heroine, Alex, was also pretty awesome. Alex is a survivor, losing her mother and brother to a Rogue attack when she was a child, she and her father escaped to Alaska where she has carved out a life for herself, trying to put her awful past behind her. When Kade comes to her small town to investigate slayings in the area, the two of them have an instant attraction. I wouldn’t say it was insta-love, but it is very intense, very quickly, but it is still realistic. Their connection is very strong, and with the dual POV, you know what they are feeling and you can see how and why they fall for each other so quickly. I also love how Alex was the one to put herself out there to Kade. He may have initiated first kiss, but she did the rest. She knew she wanted him, and she went for it, and I really liked that. (view spoiler)[Then with her history, you would expect her to be afraid of him once he tells her that is is of the same breed as the monsters from her past, but she already knows she loves him, she trusts him, and accepts him 100%, with no freak outs at all. Woohoo! You go girl! (hide spoiler)]. And even when he tries to pull away in order to protect her, again she stands strong and refuses to let him, and I wanted to cheer for her. The love scenes are hot, and the romance is epically swoony - OMG that boy can bring the swoon! There are no games, no stupidness, they both talk to each other about what they are feeling, and just go with it. Thank God! There is also plenty of action, as Kade returns to his Alaskan home to investigate just what (or who) is responsible for all of the recent killings, and in doing so he has to face a secret from his past. And while he deals with that, he discovers what happened to the mysterious Ancient, uncovers another of Dragos’ schemes and calls the Order boys in who show up in all of their badass glory to kill minions, fight bad guys and blow shit up. Oh yeah! The next book is also set up beautifully with Brock developing a bit of a fixation on Alex’s best friend Jenna, who has had her own dealings with the Ancient. What is going on there??? Looking forward to seeing how that all unfolds. Another fantastic addition to this fantastic series. 5 action packed, swoony stars.

I know I said in the reviews of the past 6 books (this is #7) that I wouldn't continue the series. And here I am, continuing the series.Anyhow, I enjoyed this book a lot more than the previous ones. I thought the relationship happened a bit too fast, specially since the heroine had been traumatized by vampires in her childhood, so how she got over that he was one too, was crazy. Now I want to see what the Ancient did to Jenna and what's the deal with Hunter and Harvard. I think though that I'll try it in print. The narrator SUCKS. She has the worst male voices.

I started this series a while ago. For the life of me I can't remember why I quit reading it.Reminds me a lot of Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood. Will continue on with the next book. I love that this was set in Alaska. It is my very favorite place for books I read to be set in.

Something about the enigmatic stranger who's shown up to investigate it draws her in and she finds herself confiding in him secrets she's kept repressed for a very long time. Together they seek the source of the murders all the while Kade tries to keep a secret shame of his own- one that he fears should have come out a long time ago to have prevented the horror his family and hometown are now dealing with.As stated earlier, this entry into Adrian's Alien Breed series didnt really hold my interest. I felt no real depth from either of the two main characters even though they had enough tortured past between them to bring plenty of character development. But vital tension, specifically sexual in this book, was missing and that's what makes these types of novels work for me I'm afraid. The continuing saga of the the original alien progenitor who created the vampire breeds after landing on earth eons ago, running amok and creating havoc does spark the book up a bit- but not enough to carry it. However, whatever happened in the cabin between The Ancient, or Progenitor, and Alex's friend was very intriguing so I will definitely be looking forward to the next release. This is series didnt really start off with a bang for me although there has been some very good releases that manage to keep me reading on. This, was not one of them- So, 2 out of 5 from me.

Who knew things could get so hot in the cold wilderness of Harmony, Alaska? Kade knows how to deliver, and he is such a sweetie! Despite his off-duty partying and his hardcore demeanour, Kade falls prey to an Alaskan bush pilot named Alexandra Maguire. Despite his off-duty partying and his hardcore demeanour, Kade falls prey to an Alaskan bush pilot named Alexandra Maguire. I think deep down he just wanted to be loved and accepted by both his family and Alex. He was tortured for a long time before he came to the Order a year ago because of his fear of following his brother’s path. So when he got the call, he fled to Boston to escape his fear and guilt. I see the same thing with Alex who conjures up lies about her past to cover up the truth. Both Kade and Alex try to outrun their past, leaving them lonely and isolated as the tundra that surrounds them. I didn’t think I would fall in love with Kade as much as I did. We hardly get a chance to get to know him before his book came out, so you can imagine my surprise when I opened this book and totally fell for Kade’s gentleness. After the so-so romance in Ashes of Midnight, I think it’s safe to say that Lara Adrian really stepped things up in this one. The romance is hot, but with a lot of emotional elements that Kade and Alex both experience. And the action is fast-paced and downright entertaining! If it wasn’t for the romance, I’d read Adrian’s books just for the gritty action.Did anyone else find that Kade seemed a little whipped by Alex? It’s so funny because Alex does whatever she wants. Kade seems to be a step behind as he tries to persuade her otherwise. Like when Alex says she’s going with him to check out the mining building? And also the time when she goes to Zach after she hears about Big Dave’s death? I know it’s because Alex doesn’t understand the graveness of the situation yet, but it’s just hilarious to see Kade running after her. I also found myself feeling a bit bad for the Ancient. I may be alone in that regard, but how can you not feel sorry for a man tortured and starved by his enemies? He’s alone and freezing in a world that’s totally different from the one he once knew, running from his enemies that he doesn’t even know. He sees no end to this pursuit AND he is experiencing terrible bloodlust! Poor guy. What I’m really dying to know is what the hell did he do to Jenna? And it seems that there’s a large amount of bromance in this novel. The guys of the Order get a little sappy in this one. It’s kinda cute to see them looking out for one another like that, with the strong friendship between Brock and Kade and Tegan coming in and giving Kade some advice. There’s even that moment that Kade shares with his twin at the end. They’re all beautiful moments. But what the hell is up with Chase? He’s acting weirder and weirder now. Looks to me that even Hunter is adjusting far better than Chase is.

Alex is a pilot in Alaska who earns a living delivering supplies to remove villages. When doing one of her usual deliveries she discovers the bodies of an entire family who have been brutally murdered. The terrifying thing for Alex is that she has seen this kind of damage before - when her Mother & Brother were killed years ago. She had escaped the tragedy with her Father & they fled to Alaska hoping they would be safe there. Alex has never told anyone the truth about her past and doesn't know who to turn to now that it seems to be happening again. The Order becomes aware of the killings when video footage of the bodies turns up on the internet. Suspecting that the family was killed by Rogues Lucan decides to send Kade back to his homeland to control the situation and make sure the Rogues are dealt with. Kade left Alaska a year ago to join the Order in Boston and hasn't been home since, avoiding issues he has with his twin brother Seth. Although Kade has made appearances in previous books we don't know much about him or his history and I really enjoyed finding out more about him. His talent is telepathy with animals and he is able to to see through their eyes and control their actions which I found really interesting. The attraction between Kade and Alex is instant although he has no idea that she is a Breedmate and she struggles to understand why she finds herself so drawn to him. I enjoyed seeing their relationship develop and really loved Kade. There are so many things going on in this book & I couldn't put it down. The ongoing war between the Order and the Rogues is developing really well & I can't wait to see what happens next. I've been a fan of this series since the first book but I honestly think it is just getting better & better with each new release. I love the world that Lara Adrian has created - it drew me in from the beginning and has kept me hooked ever since. The action is fast paced and building up to what I can only assume will be a spectacular finish, although I'm pleased to say we have several more books to come! I've already re-read most of the books in the series & I know I'll be happy to read this one again in the future. If you haven't already discovered the series then I'd highly recommend it.

The beginning deals with the events that draw Alex and Kade together for a while before they even meet, but it's good to know, and it makes their meeting that much more interesting. this book has the most action out of any except maybe Veil of Midnight. Alex is a pilot in Alaska who discovers a grisly scene at her first delivery. And entire family has been brutally slaughtered, but she recognizes the look since her mother and brother were killed by Rogues when she was a girl. Then Kade shows up. He becomes her rock in her crazy world. But his problems are bigger than just a rogue breed male. His twin Seth is close to succumbing to the bloodlust and turning Rogue himself. So Kade has to save his brother (can he?), track down the Rogue and Dragos is still at large, plus the Ancient is still out there, plus he has to deal with his feeling for Alex. It's a really good book! Alex and Kade are great together and I hope that Jenna turns out to be a breedmate, because Brock's story Taken by Midnight is next and those 2 would be good together. And speaking of Jenna, what did the ancient one do to her? she is speaking his language now and they are taking her with them to Boston. Also, is the ancient one really dead?My fave quote is "...he knew to his marrow that it was a taste of Alex he wanted. Onlyher."

I absolutely adore Kade! In the other books you don't really get a sense of who or what Kade and Brock are all about since they are new to the Breed Brotherhood. Her airplane flying skills are definitely going to come in handy when the females go on another recon mission. Wit Alex's flying/gun handling skills and Renata's driving/fighting skills, they will definitely make an unstoppable duo. Although I don't find that her special talent will really be of any contribution to the war against Dragos. Maybe having a living Breedmate lie detector could come in handy at some point, who knows. Now Kade's talent should definitely come in handy and in fact already has. It was also interesting to read more about the family dynamics of someone who belongs to the Breed. With the other warriors you really don't hear anything of the family they may have left behind in a Darkhaven somewhere. In this instance we find that Kade has somewhat of an evil twin. The relationship dynamics between the two main characters kind of goes as expected where Kade feels that he isn't good enough or honorable enough for Alex and is the first to realize between the two that only what they feel for each other should matter. It actually ends up not taking as much convincing as is usual in this series for Kade to realize that she is right and in fact his fighting his attraction for her doesn't matter since he is already blood bonded to her. I am not sure of how I feel or where the author is going to take the story about Alex's friend Jenna now being involved in the drama. That will have to be left for the next story.

Well, I enjoyed this book, but not as much as the others in the series. I liked the advancement of the overall series plot. I liked Alexandra, and absolutely loved Kade. I didn't buy their romance though. It was very rushed, and it didn't seem natural to me at all. Also, when Alex finds out certain things about Kade, her reactions are really implausible to me. I did enjoy it. It just wasn't as well written as the rest of the series.
