A Whisper in the Dark (Charlie Travesty, #1)
A city ruled by vampires. A disgraced princess. A world underground.Charlotte Travesty lives in a world of comfort. Glittering nightclubs, a lavish mansion, and a staff of humans at her beck and call. Being a royal vampire means her future is secured—all she has to do is get through the Awakening, an ancient ceremony every vampire experiences when they come of age.But when her Awakening arrives at last, everything changes in one terrifying instant.Cast from her home and rejected by the royal family, Charlie is forced into a life of fear and brutality. Where creatures called weepers live below the city, kept at bay by an unlucky sector of fighters enslaved by the very king who cast her out. Charlie now finds herself among the ranks. She soon learns that weepers aren’t all she needs to fear in her new life. Other workers are dying in the tunnels below ground. Charlie knows that if she’s going to survive, she must form alliances with the very humans that despise her. But will she win their trust in time? Or will she die in the very darkness she was born to rule? For fans of Sarah J. Maas’s Crescent City trilogy and Charlaine Harris’s Sookie Stackhouse series, A Whisper in the Dark is the first volume in the Charlie Travesty serial.

Why is it so short? Only 5 chapters. It isn't enough. I want more of the bloodthirsty vampires dammit. Also, the writing was immensely better than the last books of this author. With some books, I’ll admit will skip over parts of the book because they are boring me. Guilty as charged, I know. But whenever I read one of K.J’s books, I never skip over any part. I read it and then I read it again! It was also cool to be introduced to yet another author! “Hello?”“Hey, Jules.” My throat suddenly feels thick. I swallow. Silence on the other end. “So it matters to you, then? What I am?” In my opinion it’s always exciting to see your name written in a book co written by your favourite author. Just saying. ‘All the while, the creature on the windowsill doesn’t do anything - she just stays through every pang of panic, every tear of terror, a silent presence. Sometimes, though, that’s really all you need.’ This book was pretty good! A little on the short side but that definitely won’t stop my from giving it 5 Stars! I can’t wait to read Volume 2 and the rest of Charlie’s story! 5/5 Stars! Release date: April 28, 2020

(Do I need to say this is the review of an eARC? Dunno. But it is. Regardless, my opinions here are honest and entirely my own.)I'm always a little leery about co-authored books despite the fact that I've never actually read a bad one. This was no exception. It was like an nuanced meal where I could taste flavors of things I've had before but was, on the whole, it's own thing entirely. I felt like I could *see* the settings, feel the press of people in the bar, the desolation of the streets just before sunrise. I love Charlie. She is all that I want in a protagonist. Good and yet, flawed. Beneath the veneer is a monster waiting to be released and I adore it. I was game for who I thought the love interest would be, even though it would not be my first choice. And then the end happened and my fangirling heart squealed with joy.I look forward to the next installment of this story. I already knew that K.J Sutton wrote books that I love, that speak to the twisted places in my heart that sing for these dark themes. Now I'm excited to check out what Jessi Elliott has to offer. I feel like I made out like a bandit on this deal: a great new story to read, a new author's work to pursue, a beloved author's work to revisit. Yes, yes, yes. Go. Read. This. Book.

*I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review*Vampire stories are hit or miss for me and this one slapped! A Whisper in the Dark is a fast paced read and an ode to everything great about paranormal romance with a dash of dystopian on the side. The world created by Elliot and Sutton is nuanced and drew me in from the first page. The plot was intricate with unique characters who I loved to read about. I only have one complaint: why do I have to wait so long for the next installment?

The world seems to have a very interesting history and I would love to learn more in the future volumes!😍 Jessi and Kelsey work so we’ll together in this. Their writing styles melded like butter on toast. PERFECTION🙌🏻 this was definitely sexy and I can see where this is going and I AM HERE FOR IT. I definitely did get Crescent City vibes and True Blood vibes! On a side note, I have this 4 stars because at some points I found it quite slow, but I feel like the whole first volume is just setting the scene and acting as the exposition so I totally understand. But the volume as a whole only took me about less than two hours to read (with minimal distractions😂).I’m going to be getting into some spoilers so stop reading if you haven’t read Awitd. And if you HAVENT READ IT, GO READ IT!Okay but for real I’m already in love with Charlie/Charlotte/Anna. I can see her character development turn her into a more confident, witty, and strong female character. I also loved how relatable she is! If any of us were in the same situation we would have been acting the same way. When Drew showed up I was like hot damn here we gooo! Love interest, yes please! He seems like quite the intellect in terms of reading people’s emotions and also he can literally get along with ANYONE. Then there is Ada, I have my suspicions about her...maybe relating to Gabriella, her mom, or someone else royal??? I want to take this time to say I call dibs on Noah. As soon as he walked through the crowd in the bar I was sold and we didn’t even know what would happen several pages later😂 speaking of which THE TENSION OMFG. If there isn’t a build up of tension between him and Charlie with banter and vampire dominance I will be sorely disappointed. SO THERE BETTER BE (@ Kelsey and Jessi)! I feel like there is a love triangle coming on maybe???Lastly, I already have a few theories about Charlie’s mom and her father but who knows if I’ll even be remotely correct😂This is getting quite long so if you want to fangirl with me feel free to dm on my Instagram (@morrigans_books)!

It has been a long time since I read a vampire story that I actually enjoyed. This one broke the pattern! It did not disappoint. As a serial - and part of a larger story, you will no doubt wish this installment was longer, but I have a feeling it will be worth it. The second you step into Charlie Travesty's world, you are completely immersed in a whole new world of vampires. We're talking a world that is glittering and gritty all at once. A world so dark and lovely that you'll be flipping the pages wondering how something can be so good. I was on the fence about Charlotte - our vampire princess protagonist - when I first began reading. I don't know if that was because I went into this just genuinely hoping that it wouldn't be like every other vampire novel I've read in the past decade or because she just came across as flawless. But after the first 20% or so, I was sold on our heroine and never looked back. You dig into her thoughts, feelings and actions and you really come to understand how cruel it can be to be like her. And you come to understand what it's like to belong no place. I feel such sympathy for Charlie and it's taught me something about our own society in a way. Charlie isn't our only likeable character though. There are so many more! I loved Drew and his bright outlook on life in the face of such darkness. I can't wait to see more of him in the coming serials. And I loved the dynamics of Nina. She was snarky and hard and kickass. While she could rub you the wrong way, I really enjoyed the different aspects of her personality. Then you have the kindness of Gabriela - a mother figure to Charlie. You could really feel how much she cares for Charlie despite the trouble she could get in. It's really beautiful. Overall, this serial was amazing and I can't wait to dig into future installments. I'm giving it 4.5 stars - a really solid start! I would recommend this story to vampire enthusiasts. And if you're tired of the same old vampire stories, I encourage you to give this one a try. However, *DISCLAIMER*, if you're not into strong language, sex (especially descriptive sex), and detailed vampire feedings, I'd suggest maybe skipping this one. Otherwise, I really think you'll enjoy this read!I was given a free eARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Thanks so much to the authors for providing me a chance to read this book early. I greatly appreciate it.

Recently I’ve been struggling to read any type of fantasy, I don’t know what it is but it’s been hard to get into a story... UNTIL NOW. When I was given this arc at first I wasn’t sure about how I felt... vampires? I thought that mythical beast was slain when the twilight series fizzled out... but let me tell you, this is NOT TWILIGHT. These vampires are gritty, sexy, and don’t sparkle in the sun. The main character Charolette is utterly complicated in the best way possible, I instantly fell in love with her. She isn’t a typical protagonist in my opinion, she’s not overly perfect or too mean and standoffish. She is the perfect blend of flawed and intriguing. I want to see where this journey takes her!The prose of this story is so lush, the authors did not spare their talent in any way. I found myself constantly highlighting passages in my kindle because they were just so beautifully written. I enjoyed the way the authors made me squirm whenever Charlie narrates her blood sucking or how the blood explodes on her taste buds when she drinks a bloody cocktail (I’m not a fan of blood). The world building is spectacular, I haven’t seen anything like it for a long time. This story made me fall in love with urban fantasy, everything about the world seemed so unique to me and vastly original. Although, I do have some questions about the world itself but the answers will probably come along with the future volumes. I really love the way that the authors take a new approach to how vampires are treated in the society they live in, they rule the damn place! I truly am just astounded by the world building. The world, New Ve, they live in seems almost dystopian in the way that it’s built. I for one love a good dystopian, but the authors added fantastical elements that make you yearn to be one of the nymphs or fairies that get to party in the cities! The only problem for me with this story was that it lagged at the 80% mark and I found myself struggling to keep my eyes on the page, but then it picked up quickly again after that (hello Noah Forrest!). I also found Drew to be a little too chipper but I’m hoping he reveals a dark back story... Also a warning to those who are faint of heart and prefer their stories to have not a lot of swearing and more soft core romance, this may not be the choice for you as there is some heavy usage of the F-bomb and on the first page our main girl is getting prodded by an erection (but hey, sexual freedom is something I support. I’m rambling now... sorry) Overall, the first instalment of the Charlie Travesty serial, A Whisper in the Dark, is amazing and I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for an intriguing read with intense world building and love characters with good depth! I am very much looking forward to volume 2!

Drew nudges me with his elbow and I look at him. “It’s going to be fine, Charlie. Remember, you’re a badass vampire!” So I was *vaguely gestures* around for the Twilight craze. I remember it all maybe a little too vividly, tbh. But I wasn't really into vampires or fan culture at the time so I didn't get to enjoy it. You can bet I'm jumping on the bandwagon and enjoying every minute of the vampire craze this time around. With favorite shows like The Vampire Diaries and Legacies and now amazing books like Crave and currently, A Whisper In The Dark, I'm living for it. In A Whisper In The Dark, the first story arc and novella, we meet Charlie, the vampire princess formally known as Charlotte. Charlie is on the verge of her Awakening, which is when vampires mature into adults resulting in their eyes changing colors. Charlie's father is the highly feared Vampire King who decided to split society up by factions depending on a vampire's adult eye color in an attempt to create a utopian society. (Think along the lines of Divergent) Anyone who has ever read a Dystopian knows about how well that works but I won't spoil anything for you as I still think it's a fresh perspective on that and vampires in general. Charlie finds herself in an unexpected place and is lost and confused. There's so many different paths her story can go and I'm eagerly awaiting the continuation. Thank you to K.J. Sutton and Jessi Elliott for the early review copy!

Due to the color of her eyes, she is banished to live in the Sewer sector. This is probably a small mercy from the King because it should have been worse.I also want to know more about the characters: Ada, the bounty hunters, the Weepers and especially her scandalous mother! I think I can see the forbidden love trope happening too. I'm not going to lie, when I got to the end of chapter 5 and nothing romantic happened, I thought I bought a sampler or my copy didn't download it all???After some research, each book in the series is being released every few weeks with the final book, #4 releasing on June 9, 2020. So don't be confused like I was lol or maybe I'm the only one? I think I will wait for the final book, which isn't to far away, so I can just binge read. I obviously flew through this, being under 100 pages and all, so in my opinion I think this series is promising and like the dark, paranormal romance vibe.

Blood drips from his mouth, his fangs still protruding from his lips, which curl into a slow smirk.I start to back away, alarm bells clanging in my head to leave. Everything about this vampire reeks of danger and destruction. I whirl on my heels and start for the doorway, but before I get close, Noah is there, blocking my exit. As I gasp, he tilts his head, those piercing green eyes roaming over me from head to toe. Slowly, he licks the blood from his lips. I hold my breath, heart pounding against my chest so hard I can feel it in my throat. “See anything you like?” the vampire asks finally. His voice is made of silk sheets and moans in the night. When I open my mouth, nothing comes out. I want to push past him and run away, but I’m rooted in place. Noah chuckles. “You take your time, princess.” He lowers his voice. “I don’t mind the view.”Want to find out what happens next?GRAB YOUR COPY TODAY: relinks.me/B086W2Z522⁣

ARC Review:A Whisper In The Dark Vol. One manages to do something incredibly interesting in just the first few pages. The introduction to the book left me with an amused grin, and an idea of just how fun and sassy this book would be - which is what I've come to expect from Jessi Elliott - but a handful of pages later and I'm made aware of the glittery fun facade, cracking to reveal what looks to be a gritty, dark novel. One that promised to be full of heartache and sorrow, but also growth. It didn't disappoint. It was about the halfway point of the book that I found myself incredibly nervous, because I was already committed to the story of Charlotte and how in the world could I be half way done with this book? That's a sign of an amazing novel, and amazing this one proved to be.Rich descriptions brought a fantasy city to life behind my eyes. I was transported to glittering manors, decrepit buildings and vast underground waterways. The sights, the sounds, the smells. It was so vibrant, without being monotonous in it's detail. As with all good series, this one ended leaving me almost screaming. I wanted more, I needed to know what was happening. Who these people were, what motivated them. To say I am anxiously awaiting the next book is an understatement.

First, I would love to thank the lovely authors of this novel for giving me a chance to be an ARC reader, I'm so thankful!!Second, I adored A Whisper in the Dark!! I love Charlie as a character, she's not like other fantasy heroines. I'm so tired of MC's who make blatantly dumb decisions and that's so not Charlie. She recognizes a shift in her world and adapts, but is still knowledgeable about her needs. It's also interesting how she speaks about her vampire impulses, not going into it because it's not something I want to spoil, but it's an aspect of the book I really loved so I thought it was worth mentioning. Charlie isn't a dumb whiney girl needing to be saved by a guy, and sometimes that's hard to come by in a female MC no matter the genre, so I really appreciate that part of her. I'm excited to see where Charlie's story goes and to get to know more about the new sexy guys in her life, can't wait for the next installment!

Thanks to the authors who provided me with an ARC to review.3.5 Star This series is being released in instalments over the next few months, and this is the first 5 chapters. However, don't think that means nothing happens! This book is a great introduction to the world and to our cast of characters. I found myself quickly emerged in the societal divides and prejudices of this world, as Charlie has to navigate the challenges of going from treasured princess to outcast. This book had everything I could ever want from a new vampire novel after a long hiatus of the genre. The characters, the plot, and the world were super compelling and I already want the next installment immediately (even though it comes out super soon, it's still too long a wait).Read my full review at http://zarahoffman.com/2020/04/28/boo...

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC by the wonderful authors of this book in exchange of an honest review. Since the moment I opened this book in the Kindle I couldnt stop reading. Charlie is an amazing character, one that is mostly good but also flawed, and that doesnt know much about her new situation, so she learns along with the reader. The rest of the cast of characters is great, all of them with a distinct voice and personality. Wow, I was totally gripped right away by this new Vampire World. It's hot, it's sexy, it's gruesome, and shocking. I am itching to get my hands on the next volumes. I love the main character and I'm eager to see what awaits her in her journey.
