As Lance makes plans to sneak the princesses out of the capital city, he doesn’t need or want Lady Felicia’s help. With the dark enemy in pursuit, Lance and Felicia must put aside their differences to outrun King Ethelwulf and prevent him from killing the princesses. This is a great novella for introducing us to the backstory of the three lost princesses in Jody Hedlund's exciting new YA series! The reader is thrust into the action which never slows down- danger is nipping at the heels of Lance and Felicia throughout the story which gives it a quick, suspenseful pace. The world-building is vivid and I felt like I got a good sense of the setting as well as the dynamic of the kingdom, its people, and its enemies. The world-building is vivid and I felt like I got a good sense of the setting as well as the dynamic of the kingdom, its people, and its enemies. The author skillfully weaves in character development and I felt invested in the fate of these selfless people who sacrifice for their kingdom. Lance's awakening of feeling for Felicia was sweet and I admired his fortitude over the years of denying himself. It makes their budding romance a little rocky, though, since he's not used to allowing himself any emotional connection to a woman. Felicia recognizes the noble qualities he has and appreciates the action he takes to protect her and the princesses. Their falling in love was only natural and I enjoyed the special moments they share. I'm so excited to read the books in this series!(I received a complimentary copy of the book; all opinions in this review are my own)

I ADORED this novella! I can't say that I read a ton of novellas, but of the ones I have read, not many have felt this rich, romantic, and action-packed...and with such fully fleshed out characters, too! And Jody Hedlund perfectly sets up her new series--I can't wait to read more! Meanwhile, I'm going to go back and read her other YA series (the Noble Knights series) because how in the world have I not read them yet? :)

Words cannot express how excited I am for Jody Hedlund's new YA series. I absolutely adored her last one. And with this novella this series is already off to a great start. This story has everything: adventure, romance, cute little babies, and sassy nuns. I must admit that I have not read a straight up romance for a while so it took some time for me to become readjusted to the genre. It was a little abrupt at first but it is a novella so that is a given. The detail was rich and the world building Words cannot express how excited I am for Jody Hedlund's new YA series. They're reluctant to work together at first (especially Lance), but they soon come to depend on each other as they flee with a three-year-old and twin infants. The action is fast and furious; the romance aspect (between Felicia and Lance, of course) doesn't hit until at least the halfway point. I'm always all about the romance, and so that's the point in the novella when it became "unputdownable" for me. I loved Felicia and Lance together, and I hope that we'll get to see them again in the series. (Based on how the novella ended, we should; but, of course, there are no guarantees.)This novella wonderfully sets up the Lost Princesses series, and I'm very eager to dive into Evermore, which releases at the end of the month.Disclosure of material connection: I received this book for review. What an exciting tale is woven as the queen entrusts her new-born twins to a young woman in her court, and the king commands two members of his elite guard to get his infant daughters to safety. What an unlikely duo for saving the babies and ultimately the crown princess as well since the young woman was a member of the upper class and the elite guard was from a much lower class. Can they work together to accomplish such a challenging journey? Can they even trust each other? Jody Hedlund is an author that I always enjoy, so I eagerly anticipated this new series, especially knowing it would be a book my daughter would also enjoy. This prequel to the Lost Princesses series ticks both of those boxes, and nicely sets up the reader for the series that will soon release. Even though this is a novella, Hedlund takes time to set the stage for the full-length books to come. The characters, while likely minor in what will follow, are well-developed; the reader can understand their motivations, their weaknesses, and feel the attraction between them. The pacing is incredibly fast here with the action literally beginning on the first page. I had almost no breathing space throughout the novella with the events and reactions to them coming back to back in rapid succession. I appreciated the world building that the author does, too. I know very little about medieval times, so I can’t speak to whether the customs and descriptions are real or Hedlund’s creation for her own fictional kingdom, but the vows, medicinal remedies, customs of the realm, and social divisions were interwoven with the plot to help readers understand why the characters might act differently than our modern expectations. I highly recommend this novella for readers who enjoy historical romance or stories of royalty and court life. While an exciting and romantic novella, the content remains clean and free of overly graphic battle scenes or foul language, making it appropriate for my young teen to enjoy as well. I received a review copy of this book from the author but was under no obligation to post a positive review. The opinions expressed are both honest and my own.

While there were a few things that stretchered my willingness to suspend disbelief (such as how easy it was to care for newborns while on the run), I accepted it because in a shorter story like this there simply isn't time to explain all the details. I loved how the romance blossomed between Lady Felicia and Lance as they grew to first respect, then admire, and finally love each other. While there are some references to historical places, this book is meant to be read as a fairy tale and not as historical fiction. I love the fairy tale quality of the writing, and think the hints of whimsy and magic that really work well in this story. Can't wait to read the next books in the series! My thanks to Northern Lights Press and Jody Hedlund for an ARC of this novella in exchange for an honest review.

Always is a novella to introduce the back story of Jody Hedlund's Lost Princesses series. I enjoyed this very much. Although written for young adults, I, a 53 year old woman, found it to be quite enjoyable. The plot was well thought out and moved at a decent pace. I liked how the story was told by Lance and Felicia in alternating chapters. I really liked the theme that we all need to depend on God for strength, we cannot make it on our own. Swift ReadA light, fun medieval fantasy for YA readers. Always sets the stage for the Lost Princesses series. Plenty of romance and action as a knight and noble woman hide the royal children from a terrifying enemy.

Jody does it yet again. This prequel to her new series, "The Lost Princesses" hooked me from the beginning. I was swept away with the intense beginning that just kept getting better and better. I am a teenager and I am always searching for good clean teen books. I am pleased to report that I have found a gold nugget in Jody Hedlund’s new book, Always. I have been eagerly awaiting this new book by Jody Hedlund since I first heard about it. It did not disappoint and even kept me up late at night - as I could not put it down! I am pleased to report that I have found a gold nugget in Jody Hedlund’s new book, Always. I have been eagerly awaiting this new book by Jody Hedlund since I first heard about it. It did not disappoint and even kept me up late at night - as I could not put it down! Always is a fictional christian teen novel. It is set in medieval times and it is the prequel to Jody Hedlund’s new series “The Lost Princesses”. “The Lost Princesses” series follows the journey of three sisters as they seek to reclaim their kingdom from the king who stole it from them. Always sets the backdrop for the story to come in the next three books. It follows the journey of one of the queen’s Ladies in Waiting and one of the king’s Elite Guards, as they fight to save the princesses of a defeated kingdom. This book was so very good for many reasons. The story was interesting, fast paced and kept my attention but it was also a clean read. It was exactly what I have been searching for! Although Felicia is one of the queen’s youngest Ladies in Waiting, she is loyal and she is different. She doesn’t value things most find valuable, like riches and beauty. Instead, she wants to be loved for her heart. Felicia finds herself on a journey that will last her a lifetime as she vows to her queen to rescue and hide the queen’s daughters. Lance is one of the king’s Elite Guards, dedicated and committed to only serving the king. As one of the King’s Elite Guards, Lance is committed to serving his king until his death or he is physically unable to do so. Nothing will distract Lance from doing his duty. Lance trained for many years to become part of the King’s Elite Guard, he is strong and young. However, Lance will face his biggest battle yet, as he vows to the dying king to rescue his daughters before the conquering king can kill them. God has different plans for Felicia and Lance instead of letting them embark on this journey alone, he brings them together so that they might save the princesses. Despite having differences, they work together in order to save the last hope of a struggling kingdom. As they travel to find the oldest princesses and find a safe hiding place for the girls they find themselves growing closer to one another. Yet, they must first overcome some trying obstacles such as evading the evil conquering king and protecting the princesses before they can think of themselves. I devoured Always, and could not put it down once I started. I really enjoyed journeying with Lance and Felicia as they traveled to save the princesses. Along the way Felicia and Lance learn that they have to find their hope and strength in God. Lance especially learns that he is not strong enough to stand on his own, and it is only with God’s strength can he continue. This particular quote really resonated with me, it was during the portion of the story where Lance was at the end of himself and finally gives it all to God, “I haven’t wanted to rely upon anyone, have only leaned upon my own strength and determination. But I have nothing left, I can do no more.” This quote reminded me that we all need to rely on God and not on our own strength. We can do nothing without Christ, as we’re told in John 15. We are to always be abiding in Him alone. I would definitely recommend Always. It was an amazing story that captured my attention. I was both interested and encouraged. I would recommend this book to girls ages 13 and up. It is a clean, christian, medieval romance. I cannot wait to read the next books. I received a free copy from the editor, this review is my own. I was not obligated to write a good review.

I love Jody Hedlund's stories. When I read her first YA book, I thought I wouldn't like them as much as the more adult ones, and I was wrong! I love her YA medieval stories too!And this prequel was no exception. Although short, as prequel ussually are, I was captivated from page one and couldn't put it down. It starts in the midst of a tragedy, two vow's and fleeing their Kingdom with the newborn princesses to save them from their biggest enemy who is about to reclaim the throne.Queen Aurora dies after giving birth to her twin daughters, but not before making Felicia vow she will take the princesses to a safe place and protect them. King Francis of Mercia dies from his wounds in battle, but not before making Lance vow he'll save his daughters from Ethelwulf's wrath and evil desire for power.Lance and Felicia have made their own vow's to their king and queen. lance is sure Felicia will only slow him down, but Felicia is determined not to live the princesses alone and protect them with her own life. Both are loyal, incredible characters. I really loved them. They are honest, loyal, respectful, but kind and selfless. So it's impossible for admiration and stronger feelings not to grow in their journey to find the oldest princess, protected in an abbey. This book is full of adventures, danger and peril, keeping always their lives on the line while they try to escape Ethelwulf's army, a pack of wolves and many other dangers just to ensure the princesses safety. It's the start to the princesses story, but Lance and Felicia were the best part of the start. they are so loyal to their Majesties and the princesses, that they are willing to isk everything they had. A title, family, freedom. Will it be worth it? When the only solution arrives as a marriage of convenience they both feel unsure. Sure enough, there are feelings, and lots of admiration, but is it love?, will it sustain them though their new life?I thought it was a beautiful sorry. I was sad it ended so quickly but I'm guessing we'll be knowing more about Lance and Felicia's lives through the princesses adventures in the coming books. I loved this couple. I want more! Thanks Jody for a wonderful and captivating story. You made it so real I was really afraid for their lives. And I was touched for every single gesture of kindness, protection, selfgiving and sacrifice that each of the hero and heroine exposed.I can't wait to read Evermore. In fact I'm starting it right now!Definitely recommended, young adults, mid-adults, elderly, anyone! So sweet1I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author but wasn't required to review. This is my honest and unbiased opinion.

At just 17 years Felicia is unsure how she will accomplish such a task but she has pledged everything to fulfill her promise to the dying queen.King Francis of Mercia has entrusted the safety of his family and the future of Mercia into the hands of his most trusted member of the Elite Guard - Lance. Lance has been entrusted with the princesses and the means of proving their heritage when the time to reclaim what has been lost is upon them. Equipped to battle the enemy Lance has no skills with caring for children much less just born babes. And the noble young woman who has the princesses isn't about to hand them over. With the enemy just behind them, Lance and Felicia must make their escape from the castle and reach a place of safety to protect their charges. But Ethelwulf wants none left alive who may make a claim to the throne of Mercia and so escape may be more challenging than they are prepared for. And are they willing to give up all that they have known for three princesses who may never reclaim their heritage?Just a warning the ending will leave you wanting more - fortunately, the first book of the series releases just a few days later so there won't be a long wait. This is yet another lovely read for the YA audience who wants clean reading. Those familiar with Jody Hedlund's previous YA series Noble Knights will love this new world that is opening with this novella. With a nod to medieval history as the setting this is a unique story that will keep the reader's attention. This is one of those just one more chapter books that one just can't put down until the last word.I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I offer my honest opinion - all thoughts expressed are my own.

With the kingdom under attack, the Queen elicits a vow from Felicia with her final breath... to protect her newborn twins and the three-year-old crown princess to the last. A vow Felicia intends to uphold... with no idea how she possibly can. She feels woefully inadequate— the youngest lady in the Queen’s court with her pampered upbringing and inexperience. Across the castle, Elite Guard knight Lance is making his own vow to the mortally wounded King. Protecting the three orphaned princesses is his task, though the hardened warrior can’t fathom how he’s supposed to care for three tiny female humans. Lance and Felicia reluctantly join forces and begin a perilous journey to escape the ruthless usurper, who will stop at nothing... wolves, torture, murder... to end the lives of the three princesses and anyone willing to assist them. How will they ever succeed? Lance and Felicia must learn to trust God when they feel like all hope is lost. They must also learn to trust the advice of a very wise nun... who teaches them that dead ends can be God’s stepping stones to something far better than they ever could have planned. I don’t want to give anything more away! Though this is a young adult novella, I loved it. The story is enjoyable no matter what your age and is an absolute must-read if you plan on reading the three full-length novels about each of the three princesses... which you will certainly want to do after reading Always! It is critical back-story for the series and an enjoyable story all by itself. Many thanks to Jody Hedlund for giving me a copy of Always to read and review in order to spread the word about her new series!
