Magic Trials (Half-Blood Academy, #1)
The demigods can't decide if they want to screw me or kill me! My name is Marigold. I'm a hunter living in the Great Merge - Lucifer has brought Hell to half of Earth, and four demigods rule the other half... The smoking-hot Demigod of War, round up my team to enroll them in Half-blood Academy, aka Half-death Academy; due to the survival rate of the students.... When he sees me, he wants no one else but me. So he offers to spare my team if I go in their place. Problem is, no human outside the bloodline of the gods can survive the magic trials. The demigod insists I'm anything but human, and he's willing to risk my life to find out what I'm made of... I'm not the weakest link, even though all the bullies in the Academy mock me. I'm nothing anyone has ever seen before, and when my forbidden power awakens, the demigods will regret they ever tried to make me their bitch!

Rating: 5 starsI haven't read much lately, much less RH ; I have been trying to stay away from the bully romance trope that keeps popping up every now and then.Because of that, most of my reads have been flops. To be perfectly honest, without the plump and the global disappointment, I would probably have rated the book 4 stars instead of 5, but right now I feel it deserves everything. I had never read any books by Meg Xuemei X and went without much expectations but Magic Trials hit most of my soft spots: strong heroine, boarding school, some sass, possessive alpha males not too happy about sharing, and while the jerk of the group takes the bullying path, it's not her against everyone and most definitely not her against all of her love interests. And that ladies and gentlemen, that's my jam.The only con would be that it went far too fast and I seriously cannot wait for the next book, especially with the appearance of a much awaited character. I feel like it's going to be a bloody blast!*insert evil laugh*

Yet another really good addition to the KU academy craze. Author Meg Xuemei X has a penchant for creating pretty captivating worlds on a dime and doesn't disappoint with her newest series starter. Really fast read, I was absorbed cover to cover. It was sassy, sarcastic, steamy, and pretty darn entertaining. The author has once again created a troublesome, hostile, give no effs FMC, though in all honesty Marigold (odd name for a heroine by w/e) seems a tad more on the balanced side than some of her other FMC's. Marigold has been living off the radar with her companions as hunters. That is until her companions are discovered and by association she is as well. Not only does she stick her neck out for her friends but she falls under the attention of one of the 4 demigods ruling and fighting against Lucifer's hoards. Axel, son of Ares himself, is intrigued by this firey beauty that not only doesn't bow and cower to his powers but also baits him by throwing up the bird in face. Senseing a hidden power within her he assumes she has god blood and drags her off to Half-Blood Academy to undergo the ritual that will identify her parentage as well as free her powers. Everything just goes wrong from there on, the ritual goes haywire ad Marigold absorbs the heavenly fire as all of the gods symbols pop up on her. Now here she is unclaimed and with no idea who she is and having to put up with all these arrogant, a holes telling her what to do and tempting her all at the same time. Not to mention her dreams are haunted by a dark angel like figure with wings that sets her on fire. And now Poseidon's son Paxton has royally ticked her off making her tap into her amazing powers. We really have just barely touched all the potential for this story here and we ended.. abruptly to say the least. Hopefully book 2 will be out fast because of course I wanted to head straight into it. Alot of this author's work is blink and you will miss something fast paced, and this story is no different. Love the combination of mythologies we get here in this story. I'm super excited to see where this goes.

He is a little bit sneaky and underhanded in the way he deals with Marigold in the beginning, but it's easy for me to see the attraction. Marigold seems to have a sneaky streak of her own so I look forward to the interchanges between these two. We meet the next two guys at the same time. There is the son of the God of Sky, Zak, and the son of the God of the Sea, Paxton. Just like Axel, they both try to dominate Marigold a little bit, but they can't get the upper hand over her. The first interactions between the four of them were fun and exciting. And can I just say, Cookies! Oh, I really hope this is a thing. The last man we meet is the son of the God of Death, Hector. He is my favorite so far because I think he is the only one who has been upfront with her. He might be the neediest one when it comes to love, too. This is a super fun, exciting beginning to a series I'm really looking forward to diving into. I can't wait to see what dangers Marigold will face, the way she will put the men in their place, and the friends she will make along the way. She is already strong and full of courage, even if it's faked sometimes, and I'm anxious to see where this journey will take her. I know it's a RH romance, and the romance is there, but Meg's storytelling is the thing that brings me back to her stories over and over again. The steamy romance is like the icing on the cake. I enjoy it, but the story stands on it's own without it; amazing characters, beautiful new worlds, daring adventure, and just enough giggles. The smile never leaves my face while I'm indulging in one of her books and this one is no different.

Holy Demigod! <3I did not put this book down at all. I seriously devoured this awesome story in one sitting. I loved Marigold so much. She wouldn't let anyone keep her down and even when she didn't have control of what was going on around her, she took control! I seriously can't wait for the next book, I'm in love!

I am enjoying this new series. I was immediately drawn to her and admired her strength considering the circumstances she finds herself. She is very protective of those she cares for and it leads her to a encounter with those she had long been warned to avoid. Mixed feelingsThis one is difficult to rate. On one hand I really didn't like Marigold and I got pretty fed up with the demigods treatment of her. On the other hand, I liked the plot and I gobbled the book up in one sitting. Marigold is very hard to like. She's such a brat. She doesn't ask question or try to make friends. DivineAs usual, this author does NOT disappoint. Although I never expected an academy style book, I can say without a doubt this is one of my all time favorite academy stories. Down right badOk, so, this book has a storyline that could be pretty freaking good, sadly the book was beyond bad with the worse childish writing skills I've ever seen! This book was beyond goofy, it was also all over the place and made no sense? The author tries making the heroine funny and super witty, strong, and super desirable, she fell through all these unfortunately, but then again the book was complete garbage so it really doesn't matter.

I adore the main character Marigold. In a world where half the world is ruled by Lucifer, and the remaining half by four demi God's suffice to say it's not all sunshine and roses. Mari has had to fight to survive for many years. Not long out off her teens and she'd grown up on the streets surrounded by gangs and criminals everywhere. Leaving her warded camp, she never left without an arsenal of weapons and a spitfire attitude. Luckily she wasn't alone any longer since a few years past she'd taken in a young werewolf and witch. It was with them that everything changed. They were fighting another crude gang, and had it almost taken care of when a huge wave of power appeared. Enter The Dominion soldiers: an elite group of soldiers descended from the line of Gods, our supernatural working with these super soldiers. Known for taking anyone they felt also had a lineage from the Gods, or supernatural to attend Half Blood Academy. Those with Gods lineage has to endure a trial...one that no human or supernatural can survive. Imagine the shock when one of the almighty Demigod s himself appears among the soldiers...then decided to make her attend said school and the ritual. What the heck? She refuses to bow down like everyone else. She may be human but she's not stupid. Nor does she get why everyone seems stunned at her reaction. Suffice to say things get even stranger once she's at the school. There are triggers of bullying and other things, so be warned. However I'm cheering Mari on at every step! This woman is sassy, strong, emotionally tough, but with a heart that will die for those she cares for... She doesn't know how to give up! There are many unknowns, mysteries and more when it comes to Mari....even to herself. I look forward to seeing as more is revealed (hopefully in the next book?). This lavender haired young woman had so much under strength and heart. I honestly can't wait for the next book! Warning: this book is utterly addicting!💗💗💗

WOW!This is the first book i've read by this author, and just WOW! I loved every second of it. I read a review before i picked this up to read that said something to the effect that this book starts at 100 and just keeps going. There is no down time, no sitting around in a room thinking about life and how it's all unfair and cruel. Nope. NADA. This is all kick ass excitement from the very beginning. Marigold(love the name btw), is this kick ass heroine, who is kind, and loyal to those she loves. WOW!This is the first book i've read by this author, and just WOW! I loved every second of it. Marigold(love the name btw), is this kick ass heroine, who is kind, and loyal to those she loves. She lives in an abandoned library with a witch and a wolf-shifter. She's a little older than they are so she has adopted the role of mother hen so to speak. She looks after them, tries to teach them what they need to know in a world overrun with demons and demigods, and demigods armies, and lucifers armies. Its all kinds of end of the world apocalypse type society.Marigold and her crew are out hunting when they get set upon by the demigod of war Axel, he gives her no other choice but to come to the academy and go through the trial to see which god she decends from. Shit hits the fans with the ritual. She takes on all 12 runes, the demigods are instantly in to her and what she could become. except Paxton(water god) he's an instant a**hole who tries to get another student to essentially kill her in class. Her power manifest and after she's almost dead she teleports out, where she meets Hector(death god). It's just non-stop action in this book. I hate that it was so short and ended so abruptly. But that seems to be par for the course these days with books. Stop at just over 300 pages, so we can call it a book, and we can put out another one in the series.

I have to say that I really, really liked this academy tomance! This is a type of post apocalyptic survival scenario romance but not your typical one. Your Male main characters are introduced and I will give no more information on them. I do not give any spoilers in my reviews, and part of the fun in the story was finding out about each one! My only complaint about this book was the length because, the book seemed way to small for a bunch of information that you find out quite quickly and I believe a whole lot more world building was possible. It almost seemed to me like someone tried to shorten the book on purpose and said we can remove this part and this part and so on and the book would still be fine or maybe the book needed to be shorter. Or maybe it was a rush to release or something. I just know I am a fan of Meg's and she is a very detailed, world building author, so it felt like a lot of important details were left out and I most definitely believe that book 1 could be expanded by her if she wanted to. Even so, I still rated it a four, and I will undoubtedly be reading the next one due to the fun, excitement, and unique quality of this adult academy romance.Crossing my fingers and hoping for some of those missing details you wonderful, awesome author you!!!!!! 💜💗💚

There were times I wasn't sure exactly what was going on.It might have been because I was reading this extremely late, but it could also be because of how the characters are portrayed. Some of the demigods are ancient and their tone of speech reflects that.I have theories of who/what Marigold is.We get a little bit of that toward the end of the book, but not enough to know for sure. It will be interesting to see where book two leads us. With the guys, I don't think we really got to see much of them.Paxton is a jerk. He is the main one we deal with in this book.Though none of it is good. Axel and Zak, while we interact with them, it isn't the same as with Paxton. And Hector, well he is my favorite. I can't wait to see how he unfolds into everything that's happened. I think it was an entertaining book and I'm ready to see what the next one will bring us.

The characters are likable and well the writing is just brilliant.I am now going to read the War of Gods series whilst waiting for book two as I am having withdrawals already.A new series to add to my favourites.

She is a loyal, strong, sarcastic, kick butt female lead. I enjoyed all four of the demis: Axel, Zak, Paxton and Hector. Marigolds was abandoned early on and learned to survive. She was living with and protecting two younger kids. One is a shifter, one a witch. When the academy comes to collect them, she draws the attention of Axel. He forces her to go to school different academy, where she is as will likely to die as to live. While there, she earns the protection of three, but the wrath of one. Very interesting start. Has language, violence and sexy time scenes. So appropriate for over 18. This is an RH. This book has sort of a cliffhanger. Maybe describing as a section of a book is better. I'll likely wait for entire series to come out to finish it, but I will finish it. It's a great book. I just prefer closure with each book, even if there is an over all arc. Not sections.

This is a new to me author, so I was happy to enjoy the book. Even though I'm getting tired of the "Academy" trope, I did read nonstop, & liked it enough to want to read book 2 when it comes out. The flow was decent, though there were a few places in the plot that seemed off. The main character, Marigold, was likable for the most part, though a few times she pushed the limit from being brash & bold to just plain bitchy & unlikable. Two of them are fantastic (Hector & Zak)- just dreamy, can totally see that working out, 1 is iffy (Axel) who went about everything wrong with Marigold & has ground to cover to get to that point of forgiveness, and the last (Paxton), is a no-way, what a douche, hope she can kill him off to eliminate him from the RH, cause I never want that happening! This was definitely worth reading.

Ignoring the fact that this book just pauses (it doesn’t end so don’t expect any kind of answers or resolutions) I can’t believe I read this. No spoilers because nothing actually happened in the book. One good point, I did like the female lead’s personality, she didn’t totally annoy me. How did it get to this point? What became of her friends? Why are witches and shifters present? What in the actual f*ck is going on? And then just as she’s exposed as super power girl, the book ends. Or rather pauses... nada. Luckily it was super short and i only spent 2 hours total on the thing and it was a kindle unlimited freebie. Actually no, I think I want my 2 hours back.

YAAASSS!!Can I tell you how much I love Marigold. He snark. Her kick butt personality. The confidence. And the stubbornness. I absolutely love her. She is everything I would imagine someone who give two craps about the politics of the world would be. Still haven’t put a finger on what she is. But my guess is she is the descendent of both a god and Lucifer. And I can’t wait to see her kick some more bootay. As well as see Paxton get his butt stomped by Héctor. Because I know it’s coming. Marigold is the only woman he could ever touch and Paxton had someone beat the living crap out her. Yeah. I don’t see that ending well at all. I am definitely curious as to what is going on with the Shifter and witch so hopefully we get an update on those two soon as well. But yeah this book had me up in the middle of the night unable to put it down or stop reading. My eyes literally had to start closing on me before I fell asleep. LOVED 💕 💗 IT!!!

4.5I ended up loving this book. I'll admit, the first few chapters were a rough introduction. I was bored, thought it was cliche, and then the situation pissed me off.But then, the humor started flowing and I dug the main character and the storyline.Later, I started falling for some of the guys, who come across as class-A, massive douchebags at first. I figured there was no way in hell that would change, but the author surprised me. There is an exception with one of the brothers, he's still on m 4.5I ended up loving this book. I figured there was no way in hell that would change, but the author surprised me. There is an exception with one of the brothers, he's still on my bad side by this point. What ended up starting as a grim, frustrating, angering, violent book turned into a funny, dare I say heartwarming change of a book. With action and plot and all that jazz. Really.I do have a gripe that it's too short. On the plus side, there's one more of the series already out, which I read immediately after, and more books are coming --- but sadly they are not all here yet so I'm frustrated. May check out some more series from the author.

Very Enjoyable but A Little FrustratingThere were many aspects of this book that I loved. What was odd for me is the thing I loved most was also the thing that caused the biggest frustration and that was the heroine, Marigold. I adored her fight, her loyalty and all the secrets that were revealed about her. The problem is that while I love an h who stands up for themselves there comes a point when they go from sassy and feisty to b*tchy and unlikable. She really rode this line for me. I really wanted to want to root for her. She had every reason to be upset under the circumstances she was placed however, for me, if she had been just a tad less mouthy and defiant I would have liked her more. Even so, with the mysteries of her origins and power, the fight scenes and the setting, I was thoroughly entertained while reading.
