...end of part one??? You can never tell what's what with this comic.Overall this was a fine ending volume to the war arc, and the era as a whole, if slightly abrupt in places. Just as soon as worst comes to worst, the miraculous reversal comes as a result of Bon's making up for his lies. Kahak comes to his lowest point too, but also manages to slightly make up for what he's done. I was actually quite surprised by how much I felt for Kahak in this volume. I never really liked him from his introduction, and his behaviour ranged from off-putting to disturbing. He was always trying and failing to prove himself to the others, only digging himself deeper each time. (view spoiler)[It's sad to think, he was always cursed in body, impure in soul, never able to bridge the gap of his feelings, his duties, and who Fushi really was. To see that even his clan thought he was a harbinger of their ancestor's abandonment, he really never had a chance. But at least he was able to do the right thing. The whole reincarnation of Hayase thing does raise the question, can he be resurrected? We don't see his soul pass on, but it isn't really clear if the successors are at all distinct from Hayase's soul. They don't share her memories like the resurrected remember their own lives. Is it possible Hayase's soul retains memory of their lives, and she would remember them if she were resurrected? (hide spoiler)]Left Hand and Eko I was disappointed in. I felt there was so much more potential to the two of them. (view spoiler)[Eko will at least probably come back in the the new world, but Left Hand looks done. I guess the idea was just that it had been corrupted from its original purpose by its long embodiment, and feared being killed after the war if Fushi was successful. I really thought there would be more to it than that. (hide spoiler)]It was nice seeing Fushi finally making a decision of his own, even in the face of the reactions of his comrades. But even so, it's still a decision to live for others first. As Gugu points out, it's not a dream of his own like the wishes of the others. The fact that Black Hood endorsed it isn't exactly reassuring either. Human welfare, except in an abstract sense, has never been a concern of his. This whole covering the Earth thing makes me wonder, weren't the knockers basically burrowing into his skin all this time? No wonder he always knew exactly where they were. I wouldn't be surprised if they turn out to be his creations. They're awfully similar to Fushi in a lot of ways, and Black Hood seems pretty blasé about the number of times they've almost returned Fushi to nothing. I'm a little doubtful they'll come up much in the new era. Maybe if we ever get some answers about Black Hood.I would've liked a few more chapters about what happened to Fushi's companions after the war, a few pages each, like Kahak got. A panel or two and a little text box seems like short shrift for most of them. The bear and Pioran didn't come up at all, actually. I'm sure at least Tonari, Gugu and Bon will come up in the new era, but I wonder whether we'll ever see the three warriors again. Other than Messar, they didn't get much characterization and weren't that close to Fushi in the grand scheme of things, but maybe they'll want to see what comes in the new world.Whatever quibbles I might have, this still easily one of my favourite running manga, and I eagerly await whatever "part two" has in store.
