As a Broadway fan, even before I actually saw the book, I wanted a copy of John Robert Allman's A is for Audra. He wrote the book, but this picture book wouldn't be anywhere near as wonderful without Peter Emmerich's illustrations of Broadway's leading ladies. It's subtitled, "Broadway's Leading Ladies from A to Z", and this adult just had to have this book. I love it more every time I look at it.Check out that cover with Carol Channing, Liza Minnelli, Audra McDonald, Patti LuPone, Bernadette As a Broadway fan, even before I actually saw the book, I wanted a copy of John Robert Allman's A is for Audra. The book goes back in Broadway history to include Gertrude Lawrence, but it's also current with Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth. It covers everything from "Ain't Misbehavin'" to "Gypsy" and Mary Martin as "Peter Pan". The illustrations of the divas are wonderful. If I knew the star, I instantly recognized the drawing. And, I've seen six of the women on Broadway who are in the book.Kelli O'Hara's page, for instance, shows her in "South Pacific", and says, "O's the outstanding Ms. Kelli O'Hara as Nellie, Francesca, Mrs. Anna or Clara." At the bottom of that page, it identifies her and says what the show is that's portrayed. There's an excellent section at the back of the book with short biographical sketches of each star. And, there's places at the front and back of the book for autographs.Do you have a Broadway fan in the family? Or, are you raising a child to be a fan of Broadway? This might be a children's book, but I'm still captivated by this book and the stories behind it. I fell in love with A is for Audra.

Ah, if I lived in New York City, I'd be at every play that opened on Broadway. Luckily, when I lived in New Orleans, many shows came to our city as part of their tours, and I was fortunate enough to see Cats, Into the Woods, The Phantom of the Opera, and Miss Saigon, among others. This charming and lively ABC picture book brought back all the delights of those shows and the singing, dancing, and acting that always inspired me. This charming and lively ABC picture book brought back all the delights of those shows and the singing, dancing, and acting that always inspired me. It's a veritable retrospective and song of praise to those wonderful leading ladies of Broadway, starting with Audra McDonald and ending with Liza Minelli. Each letter of the alphabet features a star or two or four whose first name starts with that letter and a poem about her/them. At the bottom of the page, readers see the name of the show, the year of performance, and the role the individual played. Back matter includes thumbnail sketches of all the women featured here, including some extras who weren't able to fit into the main book. The digital illustrations capture the essence of this talented women who have brought so much pleasure to those of us who loved these musicals and the individuals who brought those roles to life. Budding divas will love this special book as will those of us who are long-time fans of Broadway. What a delight! I read it while humming some of my own favorite tunes from Wicked.

This is such a sweet homage to so many of Broadway's greatest leading ladies! The illustrations are absolutely STUNNING. I loved the way John Allman noted every character/production displayed in the photos and put little bios of each woman in the back of the book as well. This would make a wonderful gift for any budding (or long time!) theatre fan.

I liked this a lot! I really loved the diversity of stars included, and that each illustration included what show the costume in it was from. I do wish the illustrations were a little stronger, but otherwise I think this is a great one to share with little Broadway fans.

Beautiful artwork and clever rhymes introduce children to the great women of the Broadway stage. The book includes brief, single-paragraph bios of all of the people mentioned in the text. A portion of the proceeds from the book will go to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids.

A wonderful tribute to musical theater! All of my performer aunties are going bonkers that this book exists. Also the Bernadette Peters page practically made me cry--she is the true queen, haha.
