Last Summer
From the Amazon Charts and Wall Street Journal bestselling author of the Everything series comes a new novel of love, lies, and deceit.Lifestyle journalist Ella Skye remembers every celebrity she interviewed, every politician she charmed between the sheets, and every socialite who eyed her with envy. The chance meeting with her husband, Damien; their rapid free fall into love; and their low-key, intimate wedding are all locked in her memory. But what she can’t remember is the tragic car accident that ripped her unborn child from her. Ella can’t even recall being pregnant.Hoping to find the memories of a lost pregnancy that’s left her husband devastated and their home empty, Ella begins delving into her past when she’s assigned an exclusive story about Nathan Donovan, a retired celebrity adventurer who seems to know more about her than she does him. To unravel the mystery of her selective memory loss, Ella follows Nathan from the snowcapped Sierra Nevada to the frozen slopes of southeast Alaska. There she discovers the people she trusts most aren’t the only ones keeping secrets from her—she’s hiding them from herself. Ella quickly learns that some truths are best left forgotten.

Ella Skye is a journalist and has spent her life keeping, sharing and spilling secrets. After a few years of torrid affairs with her celebrity clients, Ella settles down and marries entrepreneur Damien, and the two begin a relatively quiet life together. When Ella wakes up in a hospital room after a tragic car accident and is told of the baby she had miscarried, Ella is not grieving or hurt but merely confused. Why does she not remember even being pregnant? What happened the night of the accident and why can’t Ella remember? When her husband starts being elusive, Ella begins to investigate on her own with the help of an old client, world renowned celebrity adventurer, Nathan Donovan. Ella quickly learns, however, that Nathan may have more information than she bargained for- information that may ruin her career and even her marriage. I have read every novel that Kerry Lonsdale has published, from her Everything We Keep series, to the collection of short storiesA Thousand Doors: An Anthology of Many Lives . That being said, the oppourtunity to be able to read her new one had me over the moon with excitement. This novel has a common, almost overdone, premise. A young woman loses her memory, through a tragic accident, and then spends the rest of the novel trying to put together the missing pieces. In “Last Summer” however, there are so many twists and turns that this novel is neither boring nor predictable. Lonsdale’s characters are always intensely human. They have an innocence and a naiveté, yet also a fierce bravery and strength. Ella Skye is no different; a woman with many flaws and a passionate heart who is desperate to reconnect with her beloved husband. The novel is told in sequence (for the most part; there are occasions where Ella reflects on how she met her husband and how their relationship has gotten to this point), which contributes to the easy flow of the novel. The storyline is powerful, and the message is both intensely dark, yet powerfully dramatic, weaving a tale of the lengths one goes to to keep and protect the one they love. Fans of Everything We Keep will adore this novel, but it is most definitely a standalone work. There are so many twists and turns before the ending of “Summer”, that readers will have all of their assumptions turned on their heads. It wraps up in a nice little package, but it will take you on heck of a ride to get there.

With this one, I loved the story, I loved the writing, I loved the characters, but something was bothering the heck out of me. And it was fact that this woman rightfully had so many questions, and she let all the people who could give her the answers off the hook time and time again. She let them placate her with all kinds of versions of "we'll talk later" or "not right now" or "after we have coffee" and myriad other excuses. It was infuriating. I was getting all "bitches be crazy" and thinking that there is no way in hell that anyone would have gotten away without answering every last question I had for one moment longer even if I had to lock them all in a room together and threaten to take away their cell phones so they'd HAVE to talk. So, I knew I was going to rate this 4 stars...and I kept plugging along. Now look back up there - yep, 5 stars. What turned it all around? Because it certainly wasn't my belief that any woman in her right friggin mind would be gullible enough to allow herself to be so easily shut down. Not to mention that our heroine is a journalist. She digs for the truth as her chosen career for all that is holy. Nope, it was the twists and turns this story took. There is such deceit and treachery and manipulation in the storyline, and it was brilliant. I did roll my eyes once and thought, "do you really expect me to believe this?". However, I picked my eyes back up, put them back in my head, and just went with the story. I stand here loudly clapping my hands and bowing to the talent and creativeness of Kerry Lonsdale. This is one author that I will easily read time and time again, just to see what she comes up with next!

I was fortunate enough to read an early version of this manuscript. It is, without doubt, my favorite of Kerry's books: a rip-roaring adrenaline rush from the first page to the last. She doesn't remember the accident that brought her to the hospital and worse yet, doesn't remember their unborn baby who died during the accident. Damien seems to be mad at her and Ella knows that he is hiding something when he won't answer all of her questions. When she gets a phone call from her editor to do a story on Nathan - a rugged survivalist, she learns that he is somehow tied to her memory loss and decides to do the story to see if he can help trigger her memories. I can't say any more about the story because I don't want to give away something crucial but what I can tell you is the last 20 pages are a huge surprise. Every time you think you have this story figured out, you find out a chapter later that you were totally wrong. And trust me - the book is full of red herrings that will keep you guessing. This is a book that is going to keep you guessing from the first page to the last. Add it to your TBR list - trust me, this is going to be one of the most talked about books of the summer and you don't want to miss it!Thanks to the author for a copy of this book to read and review. YOU GUYS. One of my favorite authors, Kerry Lonsdale, was nice enough to let me have an ARC of her upcoming release, “Last Summer”. I cannot even tell you how excited this made me, as I have read (and loved) all of Kerry’s other books. If you haven’t read them, please go do so immediately. I’ll wait. And since we are still in the full swing of winter doldrums, this steamy beach read is a welcome distraction from the temperatures...Full review here: http://bookwormrage.blogspot.com/2019...

This book is another gem to add to her collection. As I was reading the book, I thought I had the plot of the book figured out (turned out to be not true!). That was okay to me, since I usually am in this position to guess the outcome when I read the types of books that I do (Women’s Fiction, Romance). I was still completed interested in the book and it was definitely a page-turner. When I was not reading, this book was always on my mind. Now after finishing it, this book remains on my mind and I imagine it will be for a long time. I wrote a few notes to myself about half the way in the read to remind me of my feelings. It is odd to look back at them now, after completing the book, I was so wrong!Ella Skye, a Senior Features Writer with Luxe Avenue magazine, is trying to replace her lost memories after being in a car accident resulting in the loss her unborn child and waking up in the hospital. The oddest thing is that the selective memory lost comes 5 days after the accident. She cannot remember anything about her pregnancy, and other things related to that time. Her journalist skills take over and this is a mystery that she needs to solve. Ella deduces that two people are the link to her memory loss, her husband, Damien and the person she interviewed last summer, Nathan Donovan. Unfortunately, Damien (the founder and CEO of a private global cybersecurity firm) will not be open and talk to her about the missing memories, is being distant, depressed and angry. Nathan is an outdoor adventurist and TV celebrity. He wants Ella to get to know him again, before telling her what happened between them. The old saying that you do not know what goes on behind closed doors, kept running through my mind while reading the early part of this book. While on the surface, Ella and Damien seem to have a terrific marriage with no financial cares, take care of their bodies and are physically active, enjoy each other’s company, have a terrific sex life and both have professions they are driven to perform, it still seemed things between them were not so perfect. The fact that Damien was not very sympathetic to Ella after her car accident, death of their unborn child and her selective memory loss spoke so much to me about their relationship.I do not want to say more about the plot; even what I wrote is too much. I think the book should be read because it is fantastic and not knowing too much about the plot is a good thing.Kerry Lonsdale has created well-developed characters that are so complex. I thought I knew them and then as the book progressed, I find out I did not know them at all! The plot is excellent. I went through so many different emotions as the story unfolded. I was immersed from the start and was pulled deeper and deeper into story as I read. I was blown away by this book and I know I will be rereading it, which is something I rarely do.

If there's one thing that she's good at, it's taking the reader on a ride of "what the hell?" and "please, tell me I'm reading this wrong." In Last Summer, I am thrown emotionally all over the place. The story started off slow for me, so it actually took me a few weeks to get into it. I just had other novels that captivated me more at the time. But about 1/3 of the way in, I was stuck. I couldn't stop. It helped that I was home sick and could read at leisure. But I began with "meh, I'm not into this." Then I turned to "what is going on? I thought I knew, but maybe I don't." After the confusion, I got angry and actually wanted to quit the book, which in turn, just made me keep going because I knew Kerry would not disappoint me. Finally, I really got pissed because I had no idea this was going to be a series. Dangit. I have to wait. Patience is not my strong suit. We do get a lot of answers nearing the end of Last Summer, but Kerry leaves us just on the cusp of thinking we're getting it all before yanking that hope right away by basically giving us a, "Tune in next week for the conclusion of Last Summer!"Success, Kerry. You've outdone yourself. The love/hate relationships I keep having with your novels seems to continue, and I thank you for that. This is the best I can do for a review right now without spoiling anything. If I give any information out, it's going to feel like a spoiler, so I'm going to zip it.

She kept me guessing and turning the pages until the very last word of the epilogue! I really enjoyed the twists and turns and the characters in this story. Please, please, please let there be a 2nd book...soon! I will be recommending this book to all my friends!

This story was masterfully weaved together with the perfect amount of suspense, mystery, drama and romance. Ella Skye has an amazing job and life with her handsome, successful and dedicated husband Damien Russell until the day she wakes up in the hospital with part of her memory gone. Her selective memory loss includes an accident which caused her to lose a pregnancy that she can't remember. Pieces of the past she's forgotten come to light intentionally or so it seems as intuition pushes her to continue digging for the truth. When Ella meets Nathan Donovan, someone she's "forgotten," she uncovers more secrets, lies and keys to unlocking what she so desperately tried to forget. This story pushes the limits on what people will do in the name of love and has easily become my favorite by Kerry Lonsdale. Ella Skye's story will stay with me forever and keep me wondering what happened next.

I was given a chance to read this book in exchange for an honest review. Let me start by saying I am not a stranger to Kerry's books. I love how she puts things out there that make you think about what you are reading and not figure out the ending in the first chapter. When I started reading this book it had me from the first page. Ella and Damien are captivating! They have a solid relationship and seem like the perfect couple. Then comes Nathan! Her novels will have you scratching your head trying to figure out how you didn't see that coming! As for Ella, Damien and Nathan, well you have to read this book! A perfect story that shows how deep someones love goes to do anything for the one they love. I can't wait for more!

Secrets unfold, as Ella tries to remember or forget why she forgot her son in the first place. Deception is beautifully worked into this piece as well, and when it hits you sit back and go whoa where did that come from? I could not put this down once I started it. Bravo!

I was given an advanced copy to read in exchange for an honest review. I have read every book written by this author, once again she has created a book you can not put down once you have started. The characters are so richly developed that you feel like you know them personally. This is a story about a young woman Ella who wakes up in a hospital and doesn’t know why she is there or what has happened to her. Ella has no memory of her accident or her loss of her 21 week old baby. Perhaps it is the reporter in her that has her trying to understand what has happened. Ella and Damien’s love story begins with a quote, “It’is not a lack of love, but the lack of friendship that makes unhappy marriages.” It was shared over drinks at a bar in LasVegas. Ella falls for him on that very first night. Her lack of memory is challenged when she goes on assignment for an exclusive with an Adventurer TV star who has lost his son and someone she interviewed last summer. Ella finds herself with no memory and no notes from that former interview with Nathan Donovan. Ella wonders if he could be the key to her memory loss of son and the interview. Fantastic story! Very well written.

I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.Kerry is a phenomenal author! This book was amazing from start to finish. I couldn't put it down! I was surprised so many times during the story and the ending completely caught me off guard! Kerry's books have a way of snagging you from the get go and don't let you go. Like her other books, these characters are all too real. Their story is so in depth that you have to go back and read things a second time to make sure you caught it. I devoured this book!!! I loved the premise of this story and haven’t read a book like it! Ella, a journalist, wakes up in the hospital with selective memory loss. Her husband, Damien, is somewhat aloof and not willing to answer any of Ella’s questions. Months go by and she doesn’t recover. Then she gets a call from her boss regarding a story. Before her accident she had spent several days interviewing Nathan, a tv adventurist., but the story had been pulled and never published. Now he wants to I devoured this book!!! Wow. This book was absolutely amazing. I've read many of Kerry londsdales books and but this may be by far my favorite. I couldn't put the book down once I started. So many times I thought I had everything figured out and i was so wrong. As always the characters are well thought out . They felt so real to me. I could feel the emotions and confusion Ella felt as she tried to find out the truth . Once I got to the last two chapters my heart was pounding and I could not believe what was happening. Wow. HOLY MOLY! First, I typically will read a book this good in one go. This one I had to break down (still had it finished in under 48 hours) to give my heart time to process the emotions. Secondly, speaking of emotions, the layout of the story takes you on a roller coaster ride of emotions. Further hooking you. The flashbacks allow you to understand more of Ella's heart and allowing you to feel her on a deeper level. Lastly, the twist! Oh my the twist! I will go no further than that because I refu HOLY MOLY! First, I typically will read a book this good in one go. Well done! I was hooked from the get-go. This spine-tingling read had elements of a mystery with a twist at the end. A seemingly perfect couple had elements of some distrusts which may have brought on the actions that took place throughout this book. At times, I was led to believe that it was another person who not to trust, and then low and behold, it turns out to be someone else. I don't want to give anything away.
