The publisher introduces the series in this way: “In a land far away, there were two kingdoms: the Outside, where twisted beasts roamed that could curse with a touch, and the Inside, where humans lived in safety and peace. The girl and the beast should never have met, but when they do, a quiet fairytale begins.” I am pretty much hooked on this fantasy manga series about a (human) girl, Shiva, and her Teacher/guardian, who is now inhuman, who may once have been a human, who is now some strange bl The publisher introduces the series in this way: “In a land far away, there were two kingdoms: the Outside, where twisted beasts roamed that could curse with a touch, and the Inside, where humans lived in safety and peace. The girl and the beast should never have met, but when they do, a quiet fairytale begins.” I am pretty much hooked on this fantasy manga series about a (human) girl, Shiva, and her Teacher/guardian, who is now inhuman, who may once have been a human, who is now some strange blackbirdhead creature in formal dress. Whom, as it turns out, we are liking very much! What we know is that there are good guys and bad guys, and that the two of them are running from bad guys, and find an abandoned cottage, where they process a sad recent occurrence (no spoilers from me) and learn a bit more about each other and themselves and how they got to where they are. This is fantasy so it is less about precise plot points and more about mystery, the (lightly) macabre, and (e)motions. In a sense, over six volumes very little has happened; there are many wordless, reflective, moody panels, but in this volume Teacher and the girl make important connections. We love each of them, and we love their developing relationship! There’re a lot of questions, still, but after a (fifth) volume in which there was significant action, this sixth one features a couple rather moving moments, and. . . a cliffhanger that we will have to wait months to see resolved. I’m not going anywhere: Waiting!

I was waiting for this one for a while now. Glad it was out this week! Very good issue and series as well. We learn a bit more about what is going on but there is still a lot of mysteries around it all. The relation between Shiva and Teacher keep evolving as well and I really like this duo! Going to wait another 3-4 months for the next release!

If anyone dares hurt shiva or teacher (Albert?), there will be hands to catch. I am so glad teacher is coming to terms of allowing shiva to touch him. They are so cute! She just wants hugs and to hold his hand! But fuck then soldiers, let them live out there lives together.

Teacher and Shiva find a new home but worry that the soldiers will follow them. While very little happens in this volume, it's still delightful. Each story very gradually builds on the previous one - Shiva and Teacher come to care for each other even more and Teacher learns a bit about himself. The artwork in these is beautiful - full of darkness in one panel but then wide open light spaces in the next. My favorite part in this one was Teacher and Shiva playing in the snow. I'll definitely be rea Teacher and Shiva find a new home but worry that the soldiers will follow them. While very little happens in this volume, it's still delightful. Teases of the teacher's true identity. I sorta enjoy the exploration of the teacher's post-humanity identity (or was he human to begin with?)

The best volume so far! After reading its 5th volume I was afraid that this manga could turn into a disappointment as I saw the story going around in circles. But after reading this one I felt it regained its quality! I really like how multilayered this manga is: dark, mysterious, macabre, amusing, intriguing and light. There is still a classical good vs evil theme, but I like how we don’t know who “the bad guy” really is. I feel that rather than the characters fighting some kind of evil, them making choices will be a real challenge! Incredibly beautiful and unique artwork doesn’t cease to amaze. Can’t wait to read the next volume!

The Girl From the Other Side keeps getting better as it goes along. This book brings to culmination some of our concerns and while answering some of our questions brings older ones to the front. Just who is Teacher? What is Shiva's purpose in all of this? These are things we may get answers to soon. But more than any of this, this story continues to humble me and delight me with the interaction between Teacher and Shiva. Their relationship is both Father and Daughter and two friends lost and in search of something greater than them. I love Shiva's maturity and yet her vulnerablity, and Teacher's acknowledgement that she is, for all her maturity and bravado, still just a little girl in a big world. And there is a moment in this story where I almost welled up with tears. I think it was a heart-felt, well deserved moment and it just cements their bond. I love these two characters and I cannot wait to see this mystery unfold further. (I can't believe I have to wait until August for the next book, hahah.)

Shiva and Teacher move into their new house, have a long discussion with an outsider, have a snowball fight, and get discovered by the outsider soldiers, while the king and high priest discuss religion and prepare for something big. Lots of plot happening. Shiva and Teacher touch and hug, and it’s so beautiful. Their snowball fight is adorable. And finally, the end is so scary. Will they be caught? Hurt? What will happen? Highly recommend if you’re looking for a manga that’s pretty accessible to read, in comparison to other popular teen titles.

This is the sixth volume in the The Girl from the Other Side. I really love this series, it's just so different from other manga out there. Always excellent, always good. This volume was definitely not a filler and revealed more about teacher's background, which is absolutely intriguing. Pretty much (spoilers), it is unclear whether teacher was an insider, who turned into a cursed one, or was a child of the mother to begin with. However, there are clues about his identity and even Shiva seems to know more than she appeared to. Anyways, time to anxiously and painfully wait for the next volume!!

Another great addition to the series. It was fun to see a lighter setting with the snow and open spaces. Also loved getting to know more about teacher and his condition. If the last book upped the plot stakes, this one certainly upped the emotional stakes and mystery. One of my favorite series. I look forward to the next book.

Nagabe is excellent at answering enough questions so the reader feels like they are learning things, while also leaving enough mystery to keep the reader coming back.

More story revealed. Better than Vol 5! Still wish we'd get more done per book. I bought into the series though so I'm the sucker. Love the characters, and need to see them through.

I don’t know why, but I feel like the story is becoming monotonous, especially with the ongoing concern of Shiva and whether or not she has “the curse.”

This volume had a lot of great story development! There are some truly adorable moments with Shiva and Teacher as well. Absolutely loving this series!
