Soooo loved this. It was fun, clever, kept me guessing and I loved the complexity of the characters. None of them felt forced or obvious and they all had wonderful layers to them that we've only just started to discover.I'm really going that this will be a series as I don't think I can be done with The Peculiars just quite yet.

I am a sucker for Victorian London and anything with a hint of steampunk (bonus points for mechanical octopus). This kooky little tale of a group of sideshow freaks turned investigators is absolutely great - the characters are fun, the plot is creepy as are the villains, and honestly, I just want to hug Sheba and give her a good home, poor lass. My only argument is that her backplot doesn't get resolved - I must know more, darn it! That aside, it's a super mystery that should appeal to Y5+ - som I am a sucker for Victorian London and anything with a hint of steampunk (bonus points for mechanical octopus). Good historical fiction for this age group can be hard to find and I would absolutely recommend The Peculiars for a taste.
