A Murderous Relation (Veronica Speedwell, #5)
Veronica Speedwell navigates a dark world of scandal and murder in this new adventure from New York Times bestselling and Edgar Award nominated author Deanna Raybourn.Veronica Speedwell and her natural historian colleague Stoker are asked by Lady Wellingtonia Beauclerk to help with a potential scandal so explosive it threatens to rock the monarchy. Prince Albert Victor is a regular visitor to the most exclusive private club in London, known as the Club de l'Etoile, and the proprietess, Madame Aurore, has received an expensive gift that can be traced back to the prince. Lady Wellie would like Veronica and Stoker to retrieve the jewel from the club before scandal can break.Worse yet, London is gripped by hysteria in the autumn of 1888, terrorized by what would become the most notorious and elusive serial killer in history, Jack the Ripper--and Lady Wellie suspects the prince may be responsible.Veronica and Stoker reluctantly agree to go undercover at Madame Aurore's high class brothel, where another body soon turns up. Many secrets are swirling around Veronica and the royal family--and it's up to Veronica and Stoker to find the truth, before it's too late for all of them.

This series is such a pleasure to read. The plots are always engaging, the heroine can be counted on to deliver her delightful brand of smart Victorian sass, and the writing is as beautifully eloquent as ever, flowing like a dream. Seriously. I don’t think I’ve ever read writing that was more suited to its genre. My oNLy gripe, and this has stuck with me since the first book, is the progression of the romance. Raybourn ... CAN YOU KICK IT UP A NOTCH PLEASE. I’m pretty sure your entire reading au This series is such a pleasure to read. CAN YOU KICK IT UP A NOTCH PLEASE. I’m pretty sure your entire reading audience feels the same way at this point 😭😭😭 Y’all it’s Book 4 and the main couple’s only just now admitted their feelings to each other, and not even in a very satisfactory way more like a 2 paragraphs’ worth of dispersed sentences toward the end of the novel “we’ll discuss it in another instalment” type of way 😭 But everything else about Veronica and Stoker’s relationship is delightful, so I can live with it I’m just left with that not-quite-satisfied feeling of “if you could just turn up the heat a LITTLE bit—“ And I honestly think the series would be all the stronger for it.
