To Kill the President
A blockbuster thriller from No.1 Sunday Times bestselling author Sam Bourne, in which Maggie Costello uncovers an assassination plot to kill the tyrannical new president. If a president is out of controlWho will take the ultimate step? The unthinkable has happened. The United States has elected a volatile demagogue as president, backed by his ruthless chief strategist, Crawford Mac’ McNamara. When a war of words with the North Korean regime spirals out of control and the President comes perilously close to launching a nuclear attack, it's clear someone has to act, or the world will be reduced to ashes.Soon Maggie Costello, a seasoned Washington operator and avowed liberal, discovers an inside plot to kill the president and faces the ultimate moral dilemma. Should she save the president and leave the free world at the mercy of an increasingly crazed would-be tyrant or commit treason against her Commander in Chief and risk plunging the country into a civil war?

Sam Bourne has written a fantastic novel that reads like a fly on the wall documentary of the current White House. What would you do if you worked at the White House and the president came within seconds of starting World War Three, because of comments on a talk show. So begins the premise of this book featuring Bourne regular Maggie Costello. An excellent whodunnit unfolds at breakneck speed made all the more powerful because of its plausibility given who is currently in the White House. 3.5 stars (I haven't actually read the first two books in the series.)This one started out like it was trying to be controversial more than having an actual story. You know who (never named, presumably to avoid the author being sued) is being his smug little self, getting into a pissing match with another unnamed you-know-who (but a young leader of North Korea) so a couple people in the Government decide to off him. By "him", I mean the first you-know-who. By "him", I mean the first you-know-who. Which may be obvious from the book title. Our heroine discovers the plot, and even though she's no fan of He Who Shall Not Be Named tries to make sure that nothing worse actually happens. Always better to not let evil triumph, even if you're not quite sure what is the worse outcome. And there's a nice little twist towards the end too. Shows honesty is not necessarily always the best policy... or is it?The book is far better than I thought it would be, and a lot of the computer security stuff is very close to reality without making it too technical or boring. Recommended if you're into stuff like Dan Brown but with less emphasis on international conspiracies. Get past the first few chapters and it's a nice popcorn read. Some people will buy this (and never get around to reading it) just because it will probably be controversial due to the subject matter and how it is currently "edgy" to be a Griffin or a Depp.

Good book, I had not realised this was part of the Maggie Costello series so going back to read those too. Gripping novel with well formed characters this appears to have similarities to the current President but without too much of a spoiler the new president comes dangerously close to starting World War III following comments from the North Koreans, all this starts the ball rolling on a fast conspiracy paced novel. Highly recommend this book

Only a couple of years ago the whole premise of this novel would probably have been laughed at as ludicrous and completely unrealistic. However the terrifying bit about this story is you can kind of see most of it actually happening. Strange times.....cracking read despite being so potentially disturbing

Wow! This is the first Sam Bourne book that I have read and it definitely will not be the last. I would not have put it down and I would have read it all in one sitting if I didn't have a six year old who selfishly expects to be fed etc!Brilliantly written and a bloody good story.

Clever, ripped-from-the-headlines high concept fiction! Wish I'd thought of it. Hideously plausible. Excellent holiday read.
